The Ruins (2008)

Goofs

The Ruins

Edit

Continuity

(at around 56 mins) Amy loses her glasses while trying to escape from the vines. When she and Stacy are pulled out of the ruins, she has no glasses. Two scenes later, she is wearing glasses again. They disappear for the rest of the film.
The ruins have an opening at the top. A rope hangs down, and people can lower others by turning a wheel. When one character is going down into the ruins, the camera changes quickly between the person going down into the ruins and the characters lowering the rope. However, they are turning the wheel the wrong way, and the rope is moving up.
(at around 1h 22 mins) When Jeff is shot at the end of the movie, the Mayans shoot him with 2 arrows, then during the next scene it shows he has been shot with 3 arrows.
(at around 3 mins) In the beginning of the film, Amy is wearing sunglasses. A few shots later, she is wearing glasses. A few shots later, she is wearing sunglasses again.
The scar on Jeff's chin changes throughout the movie. In the scenes where there are talking to Mayans, there looks to be a fresh cut there. In earlier parts of the movie, it looks like an old scar.

Factual errors

Green flowering plants will not grow underground without access to sunlight.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

When Mathias has his legs amputated, he screams in pain. Yet, the character has a broken back, and wouldn't be able to feel anything. However, in the movie the characters specifically address with the reasoning that 'it was the visuals' (e.g. it was psychosomatic pain).
When Amy and Sandy are on the temple floor, one is wearing sandals. Before, they both wore shoes, when makes more sense for a hike.*Actually, one of them was wearing flipflops before arriving at the temple-she makes a comment to the effect that she wouldn't have worn them if she'd known they might be taking a long hike.*

Miscellaneous

The rope used to lower into the pit changes length. One trip down it's too short to reach the bottom, the next trip it does.
To break Mathias' legs, Jeff uses a rock. But for some reason he heats the rocks in a fire, then holds it, wrapped in a cloth. The cloth would not likely prevent him from burning his hands.
When Eric starts the generator atop the pyramid,he announces to Jeff, "It's working." It was apparent when the light came on.

Errors in geography

The northern Yucatan Peninsula where this movie is supposed to be set is flat. There are some small hills in some areas but nothing extremely hilly like shown in several shots.
The style of the pyramid does not resemble the style of actual Mayan pyramids. For example, steps are solid. Here they are shown with a basal step with a thin flat rock on top.
The "Maya" are not played by native Maya.

Plot holes

Considering how dangerous the Mayans consider the Temple the film takes place near, they make no attempts to warn anybody or fence off the area. There are no signs, no fences, nothing. They live close enough to appear when the cast first arrive but do not think to post a camp or even a few look-outs to warn tourists or passers-by.

Character error

(at around 55 mins) Before amputating Mathias' legs, Jeff states that he is at risk of septicemia, which is, "an infection, usually of the bone." Septicaemia is, by definition, the invasion of bacteria into the bloodstream and has nothing to do with bones.
(at around 58 mins) When Jeff is cutting Mathias's legs off, Mathias lifts his shoulders and head off the ground yet his back is broken from the fall so he would not be able to do that.
