- Riku is feeling better, but something's wrong. The hooded vampires attack Red Shield's ship to get to Saya and her friends.
- Back in Paris, David and Lewis are concerned about the growing number of blood-drained bodies being found on the streets. They suspect either the Schiff, Diva's chevaliers, or Diva herself. Kai is having difficulty accepting the fact that Riku has become a chevalier like Haji and will forever follow Saya, will drink blood instead of eating food, and will never age. One afternnon, as Kai stands moping on the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower, he sees the Schiff named Irene. Kai follows her as she walks up and down the streets, weaving between sidewalk artists, looking in store windows, and buying a red balloon. When Irene is suddenly attacked by two street hoodlums, Kai jumps to her defense and chases them away. As the sun mounts higher in the sky, Irene moans and collapses on the ground.
Saya has gone to the library to do some microfilm research. At the same library, Okamura and Mao are looking up information on the relationship between the Goldsmiths and the Goldschmidts. Okamura is excited when he learns that The Zoo was built by the Goldschmidt family in the early 1800s but, after it was destroyed in the fire of 1863, the Goldschmidts disappeared. Okamura is even more excited when he sees a photo of Saya and Haji at the Zoo. He also learns that, following World War II, the Goldsmith family became more prominent and began to amass a large number of holdings, including Cinq Flèches. Okamura is certain that, if he keeps probing, he will find out what happened to the Goldschmidts. Mao just wants to get her mitts on Kai again.
Kai has moved Irene into the shade. When she comes to, Kai asks her about the Schiff. Irene explains that the Schiff were created by humans at an Icelandic research facility called Kilbed. Her only memories are of being restrained most of the time, except when she was being trained to fight. Because their wounds healed almost immediately, they thought they were immortal until they learned about the Thorn, a condition that causes cracks to develop in their skin. Their bodies then crystallize, and they die. It was Moses who banded the Schiff together and planned their escape. They can survive on human blood, but to cure the Thorn they need the same type of blood that was used to create them. They've tried chevalier blood with no luck. Their last hope is in obtaining Saya's blood. Irene shows Kai the Thorn beginning to grow on her neck. Kai suggests that Irene simply ask Saya for some of her blood instead of trying to take it by force. He then piggybacks the weakened Irene and heads toward their apartment in Paris.
Her library work completed, Saya is sitting in the park when she begins to hear Diva's singing. Irene hears it, too, and jumps from Kai's back. They follow the song to the Paris Opera House where they see Diva being escorted from a car by Amshel. Saya sees Kai running after Irene. Suddenly the rest of the Schiff intervene, ready to kill Kai. Irene begs them not to. Saya leaps into the fold, followed immediately by Haji. When the Schiff see Haji, they grab Irene and fly away. Haji offers to go after them, but Kai asks him not to, assuring Saya that the Schiff are not enemies.
