Case of biology

'Law and Order', and actually frequently the whole 'Law and Order' franchise (especially early and mid seasons 'Special Victims Unit'), often excelled when it came to having cases that made the viewer feel truly sad and angry. It also often excelled when it came to tackling difficult topics. As far as Season 17 goes, this is in the top 3 topics that comes closest to evoking that sort of reaction, that of making one feeling sad and angry in what is a sad case.

"Charity Case" does very well with the topic, exceptionally well in fact on the most part. It is a case of one half being better than the other, and it isn't a small difference this time, which was not uncommon with 'Law and Order'. The good things though are numerous and most of the good things, well actually pretty much all, are truly great. Was worried that there would be too much of a sensationalist feel, with the story on paper sounding like a ripped from the headlines scenario, but that didn't come over as the case.

Never did find Cassady an interesting character, she never really developed or had many strong traits, and Milena Govich didn't have much personality as her. "Charity Case" is not an exception.

The first quarter is on the ordinary side and would have registered more if the chemistry between Govich and the ever great Jesse L Martin was stronger.

However, the good things far outweigh the not so good. The production values are typically slick with the right amount of grit, nothing is too fancy or too gimmicky. Nor is anything too static, drab or garish. The music is not too constant or emotionally manipulative, meaning not over-emphasising the emotion to make one think that's how we should be feeling. The direction is accommodating but also has pulse.

While not subtle, the writing is intelligent and taut, leaving one deep in thought. The case is an interesting one and really draws one in in the second half, it is also one that leaves one feel both angry and sad afterwards. The moral dilemmas that come with it are handled well and don't come over as implausible or preachy. Other than Govich, the acting is very good. Jennifer Beals being wonderful in a powerful performance that left me scared and moved.

Overall, another very good episode. 8/10.

Do you know how many other children will live years past their life expectancy because of me?

A renowned actress was about to get an ice cream when his husband was shot dead outside the parlor. She recently adopted an african toddler and she became the target of paparazzi and organizations because she spent only few days in the african Country instead of the couple of years needed. This illegal adoption led detectives to the biological father, an illegal immigrant whose son was actually took away from him in an unorthodox way by the cover girl. Detectives and attorneys were all shocked when the father at prison figured out someone replaced his son with another baby and DNA test proved it. Where is the missing child? Buried in a dark spot in a park by the nanny (Anna Chlumsky) with several broken bones, but the plot is not over yet.....

Money can buy everything, but not your freedom. You can't be above the law only because you are rich and famous. At the end Rubirosa confessed to McCoy she wishes she could have a child. Producers didn't want to have issues with an african nation, so they made up a phony Country called Mamuno.

Dies for a deception
bkoganbing9 February 2014
I'm surprised that Brangelina didn't sue Law And Order for a very unflattering portrayal of half that power couple. The other half gets killed almost immediately into the program.

Jennifer Beals and Josh Causabon are the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt of the story. They've adopted an African AIDS baby and the use of their celebrity has brought attention to the plight of African poverty and disease. So who would want to do them harm?

But harm is done as Causabon is shot dead at a local market and the shooter turns out to be the father of the kid that they took from Africa. Later when he's caught the father only asks to see his son before cooperating on a statement and plea.

Imagine his shock in not finding his son. That leads into a further investigation and after trying to blame a sudden infant death on her nanny Anna Chlumsky, it's Beals who winds up on trial.

The portrait Beals paints of her Angelina Jolie type celebrity is truly not flattering. Poor Causabon dies for a deception she tried to perpetrate on the world and to keep her celebrity image intact.

Beals is wonderful, so good I'm surprised Brad and Angelina didn't sue.

Interesting episode.

This is a pretty good episode. It keeps you engaged. However, 2 things: 1. I never found Jennifer Beal attractive. 2. I never thought she could act. That is my opinion.
