***SPOILERS***Invited to stay at his friend Robert's cabin in the Canadian woods to go hunting and fishing private NYC investigator Mike Barnett finds out that someone has been hunting Roberts instead. This has to do with a number of shots that just missed Roberts while he was walking along the lake by his cabin that were fired from at least 300 yards away that was done with a telescopic site and was no hunting accident.
Barnett at first suspects it was Le Gros a handyman at Roberts' place in that besides being a bit weird also had his fingerprints cut off-ouch-that he claims happened in a baloney slicing accident at his home. It's later when Robert's hunting buddy Larry Gerard was found dead and possibly killed by a cougar it becomes apparent to Barnett that it was the work of the same person who's trying to kill Roberts but trying to throw him off his track in finding him. It was the way that Gerard was killed and what killed him that convinced Barnett more then anything else that the killer wasn't a cougar or any wild animal at all.
****SPOILERS**** With Roberts, the intended victim, using himself as bait it soon brings the killer out into the open with Barnett rifle in hand waiting for him in the bushes and ready to fire. As we all find out Roberts was targeted in that he was the majority share older of a blue chip Wall Street company and the reason for him being targeted by his attempted killer was to take mover the company in a hostile takeover when he's out of the picture. And you'd never guess who that person is even though he or she perfectly fit the bill. That in wanting Roberts dead and not being suspected-as we were fooled into thinking of him doing or trying to do Roberts in.
