Plot

The Earth is invaded by a race of aliens calling themselves the Invid. They have come to the Earth to cultivate its vast supplies of Protoculture, a multipurpose energy source and foodstuff, which is of prime importance to their race. Without Protoculture, the Invid Colony could wither and die. With enough, their race could grow and become the most powerful in the universe. Their invasion and conquest of the Earth is swift and complete. A huge interstellar fleet is sent to Earth by Admiral Rick Hunter to appraise the situation and test the strengths of this new alien threat. The test ends in failure, as the Invid meets the challenge of these new Robotech Defenders with swift and conclusive action! Few of these defenders survive the Invid attack. One survivor, Scott Bernard, decides that, even if it means his own destruction, he must carry out his orders to find and destroy the Invid's main base, a complex hive known as Reflex Point. The final battle of the Second Robotech War has resulted in the Earth amassing a large buildup of protoculture. This has attracted the attention of the Invid, a race of alien parasites, whose supreme ruler, the Regiss, sends her entire civilization to locate and harvest the fruit of their flowers of life. Already weary from the war with the Robotech Masters, the Southern Cross is no match for the Invid.

With the Earth turned into a slave colony whose purpose is to harvest protoculture for the Invid, a contingent of interstellar ships from Admiral Rick Hunter's expeditionary mission to locate the Robotech Masters responds to the new crisis. The people on board have never seen the Earth in 20 years, and some, having been born in space, have never seen it at all.

Scott Bernard, one of the soldiers, proposes to his girlfriend, Marlene. His commander briefs the crew on their mission. Scott notices some activity in the northeast section, which turns out to be an armed force approaching their ship. Sparks orders Scott to take his fighters to intercept. Marlene gives Scott a locket containing a holomessage, saying it's for good luck.

Scott's squadron engages the Invid, but quickly find themselves overpowered. He orders everyone to switch to battloid mode to gain the upper hand. The Invid launch wave after wave of attackers, breaking through. Scott's commander orders his ship to descend into the atmosphere, then radios Scott saying they have to try to break through and get to Reflex Point, the Invid Regiss' headquarters, before they attack again. Scott acknowledges the mission.

Scott manages to enter the Earth's atmosphere, but his commander's vessel enters too rapidly and is destroyed. In space, the Invid destroy the other Earth ships, leaving Scott as the only survivor. Hearing a noise, Scott fires at a nearby tree, seeing a couple of rabbits jump out.

It starts to rain, and Scott recognizes it as a phenomenon that Admiral Hunter was always talking about. When it turns into a thunderstorm, however, he retreats into his fighter for shelter, activating the holomessage that Marlene gave him. After the storm passes, Scott fills his canteen with water and breaks out an emergency vehicle from his plane, which transforms into a motorcycle. With the mission the only thing left for him to live for, Scott sets out in search of Reflex Point.

Meanwhile, Rand, a young freedom fighter, is crossing the desert when he comes across the remains of a battle cruiser. He goes in, thinking it will likely have some parts he can use. As he searches, he finds a Robotech Cyclone rider - a motorcycle similar to what Scott was riding earlier. Rand says he'd heard about them, but never thought he'd see one. He is elated when he is able to fire it up.

As Rand exits the ship, a patrol of Invid troopers finds him and smashes the vehicle he used to get to the cruiser. He speeds away, with them in pursuit. Meanwhile, Scott Bernard approaches from the opposite direction, and seeing the enemy, says to himself that it looks like he'll get a workout sooner than he thought.

Rand is surprised to see the approaching Cyclone convert to mechanized armor. Scott uses the mecha to take out the Invid patrol ships, then approaches him, asking if he knows how to get to Reflex Point. Rand, however, is so engrossed in the Cyclone that he doesn't pay attention until Scott grabs him. Rand says he doesn't know anything about Invid headquarters. Scott converts the Cyclone back, but his locket falls off, activating the holomessage. Rand asks Scott if that's his girlfriend, and Scott quietly says it is.
