- "Overcast": Light writes the name Shoko Maki on the Death Note. When nothing happens, he coaxes her true name, Naomi Misora, out of her by pretending to work for L. As the Death Note takes effect, Light informs her that he is Kira and watches as Naomi walks away to commit suicide. Meanwhile, Watari reveals his identity in the meeting with Light's father and the other detectives. He gives the detectives special gadgets embedded in clothing in the event Kira comes into contact with them or they are in trouble. Detective Shuichi Aizawa is sent to the police headquarters by L and just misses Naomi handing her driver's license to Light as a form of identification.
- Light writes "Shoko Maki" in the Death Note, the cause of death being: "Thinks of the best way to commit suicide that won't bother others and will make it so her body isn't discovered. Thinks of nothing but suicide, carries out her plan, and dies within 48 hours."
At first, Light is confused to see that the woman is unaffected, but after recalling Ryuk's laughter when she gave her name, he quickly realizes that Raye Penber's fiancée is using an alias. Light begins to fear the worst; she may lead the police to him. Ryuk uses this opportunity to once again pressure Light into trading for the Shinigami Eyes. Becoming increasingly desperate, Light coaxes information out of the woman discreetly, pretending to work for L and promising her that her information will be passed onto him.
At the same time, L has revealed his identity in the meeting with the Task Force. He gives the detectives special gadgets embedded in clothing that will send a distress signal in the event Kira comes into contact with them or if they are in trouble, and realizing that all investigators are present, tells them they need to have one man at HQ at all times to answer calls and meet with anyone who might have information about Kira.
Light stops Penber's fiancée on her way to police headquarters again by saying the Kira Investigators are impossible to meet in person in order to avoid a disaster. She reveals that she once worked under L and hopes to talk to him. Light uses this, telling her that he is a member of the Task Force and inviting her to join L's investigation; all he needs is identification. She hands him her drivers license. Naomi Misora finally reveals her true name and identity to Light, just as Aizawa, who had been heading back to HQ, walks by without noticing the two.
As the Death Note takes effect, Light informs her that he is Kira. Blank-eyed and unfocused, Naomi expresses disinterest in meeting with the police and departs to fulfill the conditions written in the Death Note. Relieved and pleased with himself, Light turns and walks in the opposite direction.
