sinister Victorian drama
paulinespirou28 October 2007
I too have often thought about the Wicked Women series; It obviously had an impact on me and i wonder what i would think about it now 37 years on.I was eleven at the time of release and remember being allowed to watch it if homework was done.Upstairs Downstairs is being rerun on Australian pay TV,Foxtel it would be good if they picked this series up,I am sure I would not be the only relocated British person that recalls the sinister deeds of the Victorian women.I recall the greyness of the production so was it made in black and white format?Such a long time ago,but i do remember the poisoned chocolates and the costumes of the period.

I would love to see this series again

Warning: Spoilers
I am reviewing this series having seen it only once when it was first broadcast in 1970 and I was six years old. I am not entirely certain how it would seem if I saw it today, but I still have very clear memories of a girl - I believe it was Anna Massey - being starved to death in an attic room and a woman sending poisoned chocolates to her lover's wife. It was like a cross between Upstairs Downstairs and Thriller. I have a clear memory of attractive leading ladies in convincing Victorian costumes who were devoid of any morals or conscience. However, the scripts and acting - even 37 years ago to my tiny eyes - were just adequate to tell the story which, as in many early 70s series, always took centre stage.

I would love to see this series again, not just from a nostalgic point of view but in order to find out more about the the lives of the women portrayed and their eventual fates. To have stayed in my mind for 37 years with only one showing it must have been a little bit special.

I too remember this series,I always wondered why they never re-run it,even today it would make compulsive viewing,I remember the one about the one getting starved in the attic it got to the stage that she even ate a spider as she got so hungry and the woman sitting on the stairs eating the dinner that was meant for the women in the attic can you imagine being that hungry and smelling a cooked dinner through the door. I think my parents stopped me watching the rest of the series, has I think they thought it was too disturbing for me it's funny how programmes like this stay with you I'm 50 now I so I must have been 10,when it was on Television, but was it BBC or ITV
