Revenge-minded Paul Carson has his girlfriend Vera distract Sergeant Ken Williams while Carson takes Williams' car and deliberately runs down a pedestrian while wearing a Highway Patrol uniform. The evidence and the witnesses' accounts of the incident all point to Sergeant Williams's guilt. Dan Mathews suspends him from duty, but permits him to informally aid in the investigation. A longshot inquiry to a key duplication shop identifies Carson as a suspect with a motive. Further investigation reveals that he and Vera plan to leave the area on an afternoon train. The Highway Patrol is able to arrive at the train station before they depart, and an armed confrontation ensues.
