- When Aang and his friends come across a fishing village being poisoned by a nearby factory, a local legend comes to life to help the townspeople.
- The gang needs supplies and decides to stop at a small village with Sokka reminding everyone they have a schedule to keep. It is an old fishing village that is in the middle of a vast lake. They hide Appa and Momo and venture into town on a ferry. They notice on their ride to town the lake's water is dirty and looks uninhabitable. The ferry driver tells them that the town used to flourish until the fire nation built their metal manufacturer on their lake and dump all their waste into the river. The gang makes it to town only to find noone around, to which they later discover that a large portion of the town is starving or sick. They get some supplies and start to leave, but Katara feels like they should help these people. The rest of the gang decides it is not a good idea to stop because of their schedule, but once they get back to camp, they find Appa is sick. The next day, the gang goes back into town to get medicine for Appa so they can get back to their journey, only to find the whole town rejoicing saying the painted lady came last night and brought food for the town. Apparently, the painted lady is a spirit of the lake that watches over the town. The next evening the painted lady comes again and heals most of the sick. Sokka says if the painted lady really wants to help these people, it would destroy the fire nations maufacturing plant. The evening after, you see Katara getting out of bed putting on make up and an outfit. Katara is the painted lady. Unknown to Aang, who sees the painted lady, he chases after her to ask her who she is and if she can help him. He finds out that Katara is the painted lady and thinks she is brave for standing up for these people. Katara had bigger plans for tonight and incorporates Aang. They destroy the metal maufacturing plant. They go back to camp to find Sokka and Toph figured out the painted lady was Katara and she had been feeding Appa berries to make him look sick. As this is going on, the fire nation, who suspect the town for the destruction of the plant, attack. The gang decide that "the painted lady" should scare off the fire nation and they do just that. After the fire nation leave, the gang helps the town to clean the lake. Once finished, the gang goes back to camp to leave. Katara is washing her hands and face in the now clean river when steam billows around her... the painted lady floats to Katara, bows her head, and says "Thank You!"
