In Phoenix, Arizona the Wells Fargo manger Mr, Carter tells the reluctant Jim Hardie he is to travel to Tucson to help the Wells Fargo stockholder Floyd Schaeffer search the Superstition Mountains for his young son Tim. Tim left school and joined an old prospector to follow a map he bought that shows where a gold mine exists. In 1864 a teamster named Adams and several men found a big gold strike there but everyone but him was killed by the Apache who hold the area as sacred. After arriving in Tucson he learns Mr. Schaeffer is at the saloon. He finds him along with Lester Cartwright, Tim's roommate and cousin, along with Karl Knudson hired to take care of the animals and supplies on the trip. Schaeffer has a copy of Tim's map they can follow. Upon leaving Jim learns that Lester is a tenderfoot. Slowly the three men become mesmerized by the idea of finding the gold more than Tim. Jim soon finds there is something in the area picking them all off one by one.
