Tucker Jenkins and his friends go by bus, barging in the queue, while Justin sedately arrives by his father's posh car. In the Assembly Hall, the newcomers are assigned their forms, but Mrs. Monroe has to deal with Tucker who is left over, and Ann Wilson who arrives late - she takes them to Mr. Mitchell's form room. - Benny Green is first to walk cautiously through the gates, football in hand. Before long he's being told off by the caretaker for kicking it against the wall. Judy Preston is still in bed - her mother tells her she will make new friends at Grange Hill, but Judy replies that she's happy with the friends she's got. Trisha's already made it clear to her mother she's not happy with the regulation uniform and being unable to wear makeup and jewellery like her Fifth Form sister Carol. Tucker Jenkins, Alan and Dave make their way to school by bus, jumping on ahead of the waiting queue of people, while Justin Bennet has it easy - he is given a lift in by his father. As the newcomers gather in the Assembly Hall, Ann Wilson is only just leaving her house, running off down the hill. Tucker flicks a rubber band at the back of Trisha's head and is reprimanded by a teacher and told to put his tie back on. "Does anyone know Ann Wilson?" asks Mrs Monroe of the assembled kids - but Ann is still running frantically to school. And so Form One Alpha is complete, excepting the errant Ann Wilson - and Mr. Mitchell leads them off to the form room. In keeping with a long tradition, Fifth Former Jackie Heron flips the arrow which points to the Assembly Hall, just as Ann Wilson runs up. Jackie happily, and politely, gives Ann Wilson completely the wrong directions to the Assembly Hall. After all the names are read, Tucker is the last in the hall, and Mrs. Monroe leads him away to find where he is supposed to be. Mr. Mitchell's class arrive, and casually-dressed Benny Green explains how his dad's off work, and so his family can't afford a school uniform. Mr. Mitchell's easy-going nature wins over the new class, and he takes registration, pausing to observe Ann's absence - "Does anyone know Ann Wilson", he says, repeating the line Mrs. Monroe uttered earlier. After some confusion about the ordering of the class according to the alphabet, everyone is sorted into the correct place. While Tucker waits, seemingly interminably, for Mrs. Monroe to locate his class, Ann, still lost, bumps into Jackie Heron and her cronies once again, and realizes that she's just being messed around. Inside, Judy (who seems to have a middle name of Judy as well as a first name of it), talks to Justin, and they have an instant dislike of the place in common. Mrs. Monroe approaches Mr. Mitchell's form room, and encounters Ann Wilson, who babbles excuses about the clock not working. Tucker sits down in front of Trisha, flipping her ruler aside as he does so. "One big happy family," says Mr. Mitchell - then Trisha thwacks Tucker over the head with her ruler, and as he turns, smiles at him...
