The tunnels

Warning: Spoilers
A dead man is found in one of the tunnels for the metro. The remains are linked to a man that died in 1948, John Donovan. The detectives of the Cold Case unit start their investigation right away to try to unravel the mystery behind Donovan's death.

As the episode starts, we were taken to the tunnel under construction. Not everything below the ground was quiet. Donovan, a foreman in the construction site, was a man that wanted to organize the men for better working conditions and benefits, something that pitted him against Sam Bertleman, the owner of the company. Donovan's friendship with a black worker, Nate Stallworth, puts him at odds against the mostly white Irish ground hogs.

After Nate died in an accident in the tunnel, Donovan tries to show his kindness to the dead man's wife, Alice, a young waitress. Donovan, who is above the prejudices of an era where discrimination was everywhere, even more so with John Donovan's fellow tunnelers. John and Alice end up falling in love, but he puts an end to their affair because he found out his own brother-in-law, Bobby McCallister, turned out to be an informer and fears for her safety, and his own. Bobby, who flashes a Zippo lighter that proves to be the key for solving the case.

This chapter of the program was directed by David Von Ancken, based on a script by Greg Plageman, a regular contributor of the series. Jack McGee, a good character actor is seen as the older Bobby. Neil Jackson is good as John Donovan. Enuka Okuma appears as the young Alice. In the episode, Lilly sees Ray again. She obviously doesn't want to see him. She is still involved with Joseph Shaw.

Forbidden Love in 1947

Warning: Spoilers
Great episode, see previous review for synopsis-. I would say that Alice, whose husband is killed in the mines, and who we see hysterically crying over his body, falls in love rather quickly with his friend. She is Black, he is White and married- you can see where this is going.

Donovan, Alice's lover is killed and she leaves town to have his baby.

We find out who killed Donovan and at the end, we see not one, but two ghosts.

Props for having Alice's husband's ghost appear- but not to her but to one of the team. At least they didn't forget about him completely.

Donovan's ghost appears to Alice and she imagines herself young an dancing with him.

This episode was lovely, there was real chemistry between the actors playing Alice & Donovan.

The end could have been a real knockout if they had done what they did in the episode Best Friends. They should have had Donovan's ghost dance with the older Alice- and then have her change in her mind to both of them young and dancing.

Still a wonderful episode, and if you want to see how it could have ended, check out Best Friends- my pick for the greatest episode in this series.
