Baldy becomes Hitchcock!
Rabical-9125 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
An average fourth episode from the second series of 'The Baldy Man'.

It starts with four pre-opening credits sequences, the first of which sees Baldy plugging in a rather powerful looking hairdryer he has just bought. Indeed it is so powerful it destroys his living room, as well as sucking the comb-over off his head, much to his distress. The second skit has Baldy making spaghetti in a pressure cooker, only for it to explode and stick itself on Baldy's head. He is initally disgusted however he soon cheers up when he sees it has given him the appearance of having hair. Sketch three has Baldy rummaging through a box of childhood possessions, one of which is a penny whistle. When he stars playing a tune on it, his comb over stands to attention and starts to move like a serpent reacting to the sound of a flute! The fourth and final sketch sees Baldy about to enter his car, only to find that some prankster has put fake eyes and a nose over the hood of his car and strands of rope over the roof of his car ( a la Baldy ).

Onto 'Chauffeur Of The Bride'. Baldy is pulling out of his driveway when he almost collides with a taxi driver ( played by Andy Gray ) who is too busy gassing on his car phone rather than paying attention to the road. As he slams his brakes on, a wedding limousine rams into the back of him, which results in a fight between the taxi driver and the father of the bride. Baldy kindly offers to drive the distressed bride to her wedding. What follows is a series of predictable disasters. They keep arriving at the wrong church, get stuck in traffic, get lost in the countryside and also get themselves and their car covered in manure from a muck spreader! With their wedding clothes ruined, Baldy provides them with alternative clothing ( which considering his taste in fashion, I'm sure you don't need me to tell you what the result looks like ). In spite of all this, the bride makes it to the altar in time.

The car stunts shown here are well performed but the whole getting the bride to the church on time gag has been done to death over the years and consequently let the episode down somewhat. The bride is played by Julie Wilson Nimmo whilst playing her father is the late Sean Scanlan, who appeared with Gregor as Shug occasionally in 'Rab C. Nesbitt'.

Funniest bit - Baldy and the bride turning up at the wrong wedding. When the real bride turns up, she suspects her soon to be husband is running off with another woman and is so enraged she knees him in the groin! Ouch!

'Back Window' has Baldy suffering a leg injury after slipping on a banana skin whilst out jogging. He is later admitted to hospital and as the hours slowly tick by, he is bored out of his wits. However, whilst looking out the window in his ward, he sees a silhouette in a pair of closed curtains of what appears to be a couple arguing which apparently culminates in the husband murdering his wife. Terrified, Baldy phones the police...

This very funny edition, obviously a spoof of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rear Window', allows for some very good physical comedy from its star, delivering yet again a sensationally funny and breathless peformance. Naturally, a murder has not been committed but then you don't need me to tell you that! Jane McCarry, the future Isa of 'Still Game', appears here briefly as an unsympathetic nurse.

Funniest bit - walking home after being released from hospital, Baldy manages to avoid slipping on the same banana skin that earlier injured him, however when he steps out into the road, he is run over by a banana delivery vehicle. Poor Baldy is left clinging on for dear life atop the vehicle!

After the credits we are onto an amusing, if somewhat strange, scene where a clearly able bodied man parks his car in a disabled parking space. An elderly passer-by tuts at this inconsiderate driver, who feigns a limp to justify using the space. We then see Baldy's car pulling into a space reserved for bald people. A car pulls up in the next space, also reserved for baldies. The driver ( played by Lionel Blair, who sadly passed away a short time back ) sports a full head of hair, much to the disgust of Baldy. Before Baldy can rebuke him, the man pulls a bald cap out of his pocket and places it on his head to enable him to use the designated parking space!
