"There's Been... An Event!"...
azathothpwiggins19 March 2019
From the far reaches of outer space it came, you could even say, IT CAME FROM ANOTHER WORLD!

Josh Craig reprises his role as pipe-puffing Professor Jackson, M.O.S. (Man Of Science), as do Michael Cook and M. Scott Taulman as Gustav and Sven of the Canoe Patrol, in this faux-1950's sci-fi fear feature from Christopher R. Mihm.

Jackson and company are in the deep woods around Phantom Lake, in search of the cause of a seismic... event, and to find the Professor's missing colleague, Dr. Frasier (Mike Mason). The trio locates Frasier, as well as a strange orb of unknown origin. Horror and hilarity... ensue.

Poor Dr. Frasier has picked up something a bit... extraterrestrial in the woods, and now he's turning into a leering, pop-eyed zombie on a rampage of love! Can Jackson save us from this foul, alien presence?

ICFAW is one of Mihm's better efforts, and contains some of his best, cheeeze-tacular visuals! Annnd! Yes! There's! A campfire sing-along sequence, complete with guitar and... wait for it... banjo! Awesomeness... indeed...

You know you're in trouble when the person next to you falls asleep.

And snore mightily she did, and provided probably the most entertaining thing about this poor excuse for a film. We've got close up shots on objects for no reason, we've got a lead actor channelling a stoned version of William Shatner with his lines and we've also got actors actually saying lines that describe what they're doing on screen at that moment! All the way through the film ...

If this is supposed to be a pastiche on 1950's cheap sci-fi films, they only got the cheap bit right ... although I wasn't aware that PVC house doors were in common use back in the 50's.

By the way guys it's usually the case that repeating a joke over and over makes it less funny, not more funny. The filmmakers insistence on having the characters laugh and laugh about 30 seconds too long after a "joke" got old after the first time. Playing on 1950's sexual politics was a particularly unwise move too. I started to wonder whether they'd forgotten about the whole "meteorite from another world!", it went on so long. (Actually this whole part provided a good twenty minutes of screen time and just screams padding to me.)

Oh and if you're going to fake black and white, don't use the desaturate option to drain all the colour out. You failed with this as some scenes were actually slightly pink! Mixing in authentic 1950's video pulled from archive.org gave this film a real Ed Wood feel as the quality level between those and the (digital?) film footage is blatantly discernible.

After all this i'm in two minds about this film. I simply can't decide whether this is simply an extremely unfunny film deliberately made this way or it was just extreme incompetence. Either way, the woman sitting next to me asleep enjoyed this a lot more than I did. Your mileage will of course vary as the programmers of the film festival I saw this at seemed to like it.

Disappointing

This was my third Mihm film, having watched "The Monster of Phantom Lake" and "Cave Women on Mars" and having enjoyed them both. The story was weak, slow, and uninteresting, not enough to pin 1.5 hours on. And I have to agree that Dr. Jackson's pauses in this outing go beyond humorous to downright annoying and too predictable. I would go as far as saying that he has a neurological condition regarding this. On the plus side, he could easily be runner up in an Anthony Edwards look-alike contest.

Too low budget to be what it wants to be

Warning: Spoilers
IT CAME FROM ANOTHER WORLD! is another cheeseball throwback indie from director Christopher R. Mihm and a follow-up of sorts to his MONSTER OF PHANTOM LAKE; it features a recurring character, at least. As with much of the director's output, it suffers from being too low budget to tell the tale it wants to tell, with a lot of padding involving sitting around in the woods to drag the pacing down. Expect the usual '50s styles, black and white photography, and some fun FX - those ping pong eyes are a hoot.

Hilarious!

I loved it! I laughed my ass off at some of the (deliberately) ridiculous dialogue and special FX. Give me ping pong ball eyes in a film and you have a fan in me. I recommend this movie to any fans of those cheesy 50's era sci-fi flix. If you want a laugh and don't take your science fiction to seriously, this movie is for you. The Professor is a great character, and the woman playing his fiancé is an absolute highlight. Nicely paced and well written, I was entertained from beginning to end. Bravo to the makers of this film and double bravo to the makers of the gadgets our heroes use to make important " scientific " discoveries. If there isn't a sequel to this there should be. After watching this movie for the 3rd time, not only am I much wiser about science and aliens, but I also have a great respect for the folks who put the film together. Their love of the genre they poke fun at is obvious. Love it!!!

It's all in your point of view

If you are into serious films , this is definitely not one for you . However if your a fan of bad B movies of the 40's / 50's and terrible jokes this may be a film for you. This very much tongue in cheek take of 50's classics is either hilarious ( which I found it to be ) or one of the worst films ever made ( it isn't ) Well worth a go if you have a strange sense of humour and you want a giggle . If you want Gone With The Wind , walk on ( no ) Run on by , this film won't be for you .

"Paddlin' Along" singing a song. Side by side.
Bernie444412 December 2023
Yep, it is the same team from "The Monster of Phantom Lake" (2006). They are back with another spooky educational movie.

You will notice various themes from popular sci-fi "It Came From" movies. They even borrowed a little something from "Killers from Space" (1954).

You will have to be up on the latest technology as you watch "The dynamic isolinear energy inversion field has now reached cohesion."

We also get to see a real "psychogenic induction despectronalyzer" in action.

If anything should happen to Frank, then "flights of angels sing thee to thy rest"

If you survive this movie then it is time for "Terror from Beneath the Earth" (2009) or "Destination: Outer Space" (2010)
