Salty Dog Dennis Patrick Punctures the Unsinkable Elizabeth Stoddard
After the letdown denouement of the Laura Murdoch Collins saga, this new plot boasts great promise and is ramping up fast. New cast member Dennis Patrick brings equal parts charm and menace to his role of Jason McGuire, the dashing old salt who gently but determinedly leans on his leverage over Liz. Something to do with the missing Paul Stoddard? Something to do with the locked room in the basement that Liz desperately pleads with Vicki to keep a sworn secret?
In addition to Dennis Patrick, another new addition is the library set where Vicki finds Carolyn sitting before a fire. Why haven't we seen this inviting room before? I suspect the show's budget was boosted to allow for such improvements as well as the hiring of Dennis Patrick, a veteran actor with more credits than the rest of the cast barring only Joan Bennett. In fact, it was the scenes of Bennett and Patrick verbally jousting that elevated this episode to 9-stars for me. I kept waiting for Liz to toss the bum out. What does Jason have on her, I wondered, especially after inviting himself to stay in Collinwood and with a sneer rejecting Liz's offer of a first-floor room. "I'm not a servant," he haughtily declares, and insists upon a second-floor room with a window--and gets it!
As a fellow reviewer noted, Roger's double take was another highlight. It's rare to see Roger ruffled, but Jason's arrival at Collinwood and news of his moving in understandably had that affect. Roger's snarky remarks in the wake of the announcement were also classic Roger, who clearly has recovered from the shaken and unsteady character he was in the waning episodes of the Laura story.
Man-crazy Carolyn is almost immediately enchanted by Jason and by the episode's end appeared to already have a crush on him! Carolyn likes older men we know from her past infatuation with Burke, and so apparently did actress Nancy Barrett, who at this time was married to her costar David Ford (Sam Evans). Interestingly, the age gap between Barrett and Ford was. . . . 18 years! I wondered if that specific time span was snuck into the story by writer Malcolm Marmorstein as an inside joke?
I'm not sure I like Vicki's becoming a nag and mother hen to Liz, and hope that passes as she moves into her role of confidant and trusted ally to Liz. "I have to trust someone," says the once-unflappable Liz. And judging by Jason's phone call in the closing moments assuring an unseen other that the plan is going beautifully, yes, Liz will need someone in her corner.
