This year’s nominations list boasted an even longer list of awards, compared to previous years, as the award ceremony continues to grow.
Viva Riva, a film I’ve touted on this website in recent days, after seeing it for the first time last week, rightfully dominated, winning 6 trophies, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.

Over the weekend, as most of us were reveling in Academy Awards thrills and chills, the nominations for another major movie award ceremony were announced, many miles, across the Atlantic Ocean; I’m referring to the 7-year old (this year) Africa Movie Academy Awards (Amaa), which will be held in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State (Nigeria) on Saturday, March 26, 2011.
This year’s nominations list boasts an even longer list of awards, compared to previous years, as the award ceremony continues to grow.
I’ll have to thoroughly scrub this list to highlight as many titles as I can – especially in the feature film categories, and I’ll do that with individual posts over the next week, or so. In the meantime, however, I’ll quickly point out those few titles that we’ve previously given ink to on this website, that are nominated for Amaa awards, including the following: in the Best Diaspora Feature,...

Update: I’ll repost this as new titles are added to the list…
Compared to recent years, 2011 is shaping up to be one of the better years for black cinema, or blacks in cinema, in terms of both volume and variety.
With For Colored Girls now mostly behind us, I’d like to look ahead to what we can expect to see in theaters in 2011.
I did a bit of research, and these are the titles I came up with, all (or most) of which I expect we will see in 2011. Feel free to add any you know of that I didn’t include. I should note that I’m only counting films in which the characters that black actors play are central to the film’s plot, or films directed by black filmmakers, regardless of whether the cast is comprised of black actors or not.
First, on the indie front,...

In the next few days, I’ll be interviewing Aunjanue Ellis and writer/director Russell Costanzo regarding upcoming new feature film, The Tested – a film we’ve given some ink to on this site, as a search will show. So, if you have any questions you’d like me to ask (whether about the film or not), feel free to leave them in the comment section below.
I’ll use what I can in the interview.
I received a screener copy of the film yesterday, and plan to watch it today, and I’ll share my thoughts some time after.
It’s scheduled to screen at the ongoing Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles (Paff), over the weekend.
The short synopsis reads: “A life shattering tragedy sends three people on vastly different paths to a similar goal of redemption and understanding.”
Further… A New York City cop accidentally kills...

Continuing with previews of noteworthy films scheduled to screen at the upcoming Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles (Paff), from Feb 16 to the 23rd…
As I said in previous posts, we’ve profiled (and continue to write about) several of the films screening at the festival, including screening opportunities… Like this one, which I initially alerted you to in April 2009 - Russell Costanzo‘s The Tested which stars Aunjanue Ellis, Armando Riesco, Frank Vincent, Michael Morris Jr, Annie Parisse, Nathan Corbett and Tobias Truvillion.
The short synopsis reads: “A life shattering tragedy sends three people on vastly different paths to a similar goal of redemption and understanding.”
Further… A New York City cop accidentally kills an unarmed African American teenager (certainly topical); the film’s plot then picks up a year after the incident, as we follow the lives of 3 people linked to the incident (the cop, the victim’s mother,...

I'm Melissa B. Miller the producer of The Tested which is part of the Emerging Narratives section at Independent Film Week. We completed the lab in June and are still absorbing all the wisdom, guidance, and feedback that was so generously handed down to us, so I anticipate by December, I'll have a clear understanding of everything I'll have experienced this week. I've been a consistent introverted extrovert my whole life so taking meetings and socializing continues to be an agonizing pleasure for me. I'm extremely proud of The Tested, so atleast I know that when I talk about it, it will be from the heart. The film, starring Aunjanue Ellis, Armando Riesco, and Frank Vincent, is about a plain clothes cop, who guns down an unarmed teen. ...
