American Cinema: Writing and Thinking About Film (1995)

** (out of 4)

The twelfth film in the series is another strange one and it's pretty clear that the series was originally meant for ten parts and the additional three just went into a different direction. This one here features filmmakers and critics discussing Fritz Lang's SCARLET STREET. Now, the title of this episode is "Writing and Thinking About Film" but I'm really not sure where they're getting that. There's certainly some thinking about SCARLET STREET but if they're trying to teach us something then it obviously went over my head. John Sayles and critic J. Hoberman are two of the guests here who discuss the Lang film so if you haven't seen it you might be wise to just skip this episode until you have because they go over pretty much everything including the ending. This here might have been something good to include as an extra on the actual film but what purpose it has for this series is beyond me. For the most part I think it's just the people giving their opinions on the film and often it reaches the level of some just thinking way too much and coming up with their own ideas of what's going on in the movie and it's something that probably wasn't even near what Lang was going for.
