Jackie Warner, owner of Sky Sport & Spa, is determined to be the best in the competitive fitness industry in Los Angeles. Jackie has pulled together an elite team of trainers to attract an A-list clientele to her exclusive gym. But tough bodies and strong personalities lead to conflict among the staff. One trainer, Brian Peeler, butts heads with Jackie on training philosophies. The conflict becomes worse when Peeler is given a chance to teach a boxing class at the gym. Eventually, Peeler decides it's in his own best interest to find a way to reconcile with Jackie. Jackie, already under pressure trying to run a successful business, gets more pressure from her tempestuous girlfriend, Mimi. Mimi questions Jackie's commitment to their relationship, and Jackie begins to have a few doubts herself. Meanwhile, Jackie interviews new trainers for her gym. Brian attempts to secure his own position at the gym by inviting Jackie and the other trainers to an evening at a strip club. The visit to the club gets Jackie into trouble with jealous Mimi. Peeler worries that the new trainer is a replacement for him. Jackie invites Mimi to dinner to try to patch things up after the strip club incident. Both Mimi and Jackie finish dinner in better spirits, and head off for a cozy night together. The next day, Peeler asks Jackie to keep him on the staff. As Jackie continues to make sense out of her relationship with the temperamental Mimi and manage Sky Sport, she also prepares for a visit from her mother, Karen, a conservative Christian from Ohio who strongly disapproves of Jackie's lifestyle. Jackie trains Tess, an overweight young woman who wants to gain control of her life through diet and exercise. Jesse cooks dinner for Jackie, her mom, Mimi and a group of friends. Mimi and Karen go head-to-head on gay issues, and the dinner quickly becomes a political discussion in which Karen finds herself the only voice for 'mainstream America.' Eventually Mimi and Karen patch things up as well as they can, agreeing to disagree. Jackie confides in her mom that she hopes to have a child someday with a woman, and to those ends, sets an appointment with a doctor to discuss freezing her eggs. Although Karen does not approve of any future plans that might involve Mimi, she tells Jackie that she intends to support her daughter as best she can.

Jackie is invited to train a wealthy client in Palm Springs, leaving Erika in charge of the gym and Jesse in charge of her house. Mimi reacts badly to the idea of Jackie leaving town alone, especially when she sees a photograph of the client, a beautiful, rich woman named Sarah. The trainers respond badly to Erika's authoritative management style and create havoc in the gym. Jackie trains the smart and sophisticated Sarah for two glorious days, which includes a flirtatious 'girls' night out.' A worldly woman like Sarah makes Jackie seriously reconsider her relationship with the childish Mimi. Meanwhile, Jesse finds himself the unwilling host of a messy impromptu party at Jackie's house. During the party, an expensive vase gets broken and Jackie's beloved Chihuahuas make a break for freedom and run away. Jackie returns home before Jesse has a chance to clean up, and expresses her extreme displeasure at the state of her house, gym, and love life.
