The last of the seven archaeologists who found and took the Inca mummy to Europe, a friend of professor Calculus, falls victim to the mysterious affliction like the others, left in a comatose state but twice a day screaming in terror, after someone smashed pottery apparently to dispense a chemical. The professor follows the assailant's presumed trail, but disappears himself. A mystery car driven by South Americans escapes, possibly with him, to a French port, but Tintin and Haddock, assisted by Bobby's canine nose recognizing the professor's hat, and by bumping into general^politician Alcazar returning to Peru, whose missing manservant was from the mummy's tribe, decide Tintin to board a freighter from another port .
