Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton study, where he discovers Tipton seated in a high-backed chair, reading a large poetry book]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, do you think Cupid is blind?

Michael Anthony : [With a wry smile]  He hasn't come close enough for me to see, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton chuckles and then quotes from the book from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream]  "Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind. And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind."

Michael Anthony : [Questioning the author who wrote this statement]  Shakespeare?

John Beresford Tipton : Shakespeare. He was often right. I wonder if he is this time.

[Tipton hands over envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.

[Anthony accepts the envelope and starts to leave]

John Beresford Tipton : Ah, wait.

[Tipton reads from Shakespeare's Life and Death of King John]

John Beresford Tipton : "Make haste, swift messenger. The better foot before."

[Tipton chuckles. Anthony turns and departs]

  • [first lines]

    Michael Anthony : *

    [to the viewers]

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. For many years before his death, I was fortunate enough to be executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton. John Beresford Tipton, man of many millions and much mystery. This is Silverstone, the 60,000-acre estate he preferred above all his other properties, where he lived actively with his varied interests, pursuing his different hobbies, one of which was giving, tax free, a million dollars to people he'd never even met.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Ellen Curry was young and impulsive. Her warm, generous nature had always accepted life eagerly, and she accepted people trustingly, at face value. She was very much in love and happily married to a man she had only known a few weeks.

  • Michael Anthony : [Ellen opens her apartment door and meets Anthony on the threshold]  Mrs. Ellen Curry?

    Ellen Curry : Yes.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony, and I think I have a very pleasant surprise for you.

    [Enters the apartment]

Ellen Curry : You've had some news of John?

Michael Anthony : [Embarrassed]  Oh, I'm sorry, Mrs. Curry. No, this isn't about your husband.

Ellen Curry : Please sit down.

[They proceed to the sofa and sit]

Michael Anthony : I heard about your great loss.

Ellen Curry : He's going to come back.

Michael Anthony : I certainly hope so.

Ellen Curry : They never had proof he was dead.

Michael Anthony : I hope they never do.

[Opening his briefcase and pulling out a check]

Michael Anthony : But I've come to give you this. It's a cashier's check for a million dollars.

Ellen Curry : A million dollars?

Michael Anthony : It's a gift, tax-free to you, if you will sign this paper agreeing to the conditions.

Ellen Curry : I never did understand legal phrases.

Michael Anthony : Oh, it says very simply that you agree not to reveal to anyone the circumstances under which you received this money or the exact amount. Your benefactor must be anonymous. And if you do tell anyone, the remainder will be reclaimed.

    [Sadly]

Michael Anthony : You're not allowed to tell anyone except your husband, that is...

Ellen Curry : A million dollars. What this could have meant to John and me.

Michael Anthony : I know that money can never replace the happiness you had. But It can help you forget.

Ellen Curry : I don't understand this, but I don't know how to say thank you for a million dollars either. Thank you, Mr. Anthony.

    [Signs pledge]

Michael Anthony : Good luck, Mrs. Curry.
