Quotes
-
Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton library to find Tipton seated in a high-backed chair at his desk. Anthony notices a new chair as he walks from the door to Tipton's desk] You sent for me, sir?
John Beresford Tipton : Mike,
[Pointing to the new chair]
John Beresford Tipton : A king once sat on that throne.
Michael Anthony : [Anthony turns to observe] Indeed? A real king, sir?
John Beresford Tipton : Certainly. Sit in it, Mike.
[Anthony walks over to the throne and sits down]
John Beresford Tipton : Well, feel like a king?
Michael Anthony : I'm not sure I know how a king feels.
John Beresford Tipton : Do you feel comfortable?
Michael Anthony : [Stiffly] Not especially.
John Beresford Tipton : Every man has a chair he feels was just made for him - or he dreams of one like that.
[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]
John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.
[Anthony bows]
-
Michael Anthony : [to the viewers] Father Gilhooley had been shepherd of his flock for almost forty years. Father Gilhooley was a very spiritual man, too. But at the moment, he was involved with a very earthy problem.
-
Michael Anthony : [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death a few years ago, I was executive secretary to the fabulously wealthy John Beresford Tipton. This is Silverstone, the 60,000-acre estate on which Mr. Tipton lived out the last years of his life. Here he had ample time to indulge his many hobbies, the strangest of which was his habit of giving away to total strangers the anonymous gift of $1,000.000.
-
Mrs. Corbett : [Father Gilhooley is in his study, reading the Bible. From the next room] Yes, he is. Come in, sir.
[Leading Anthony to Father Gilhooley]
Mrs. Corbett : Father, this is Mr. Michael Anthony.
Michael Anthony : [to Mrs. Corbett] Thank you.
[She turns and departs]
Michael Anthony : Father Gilhooley?
Father Gilhooley : Yes.
Michael Anthony : I have something for you.
Father Gilhooley : Oh? Please be seated.
[Father turns away for a moment and Anthony sits in a rocking chair, which breaks]
Father Gilhooley : Oh, I'm so sorry. I should have warned you. I'm so sorry.
[about the chair]
Father Gilhooley : It's an old friend. I would say it is past mending. My apologies.
Michael Anthony : [Slightly flustered] Oh, it's quite all right, Father, except that I was, uh, taken off guard.
Father Gilhooley : Well, of course, naturally. You'd hardly expect an old rocking chair to be a booby trap.
[They both laugh]
Father Gilhooley : Let's come and sit over here
[Indicates a sofa]
Michael Anthony : [Opening his briefcase] Father, my mission is a brief and, I hope, a pleasant one.
[Displays check]
Michael Anthony : As I said before, I have something for you.
Father Gilhooley : A check.
Michael Anthony : For one million dollars.
Father Gilhooley : So it is.
Michael Anthony : [Somewhat puzzled by Father's lack of emotion] It's a gift, tax-free, yours to do with as you please, Father.
Father Gilhooley : As I please.
Michael Anthony : But aren't you surprised at this gift?
Father Gilhooley : Surprised?
Michael Anthony : Well, I mean, you haven't even asked me from whom the check comes.
Father Gilhooley : We know from whom all blessings flow.
Michael Anthony : [Understanding] Ah. In any case, the donor remains anonymous.
Father Gilhooley : From the beginning of time, it has always been that way.
Michael Anthony : ***Ah. There is only one condition.
Father Gilhooley : Condition?
Michael Anthony : That you tell no one the exact amount of the check or how you received it.
Father Gilhooley : [grunts] That's an easy way to earn a vast fortune - just tell no one.
Michael Anthony : Now if you'll just sign this a paper.
[Father signs]
Michael Anthony : You'll notice if you do tell anyone, the money will be reclaimed.
Father Gilhooley : Well, if I did a thing like that, they'd have to drop a net over me, now wouldn't they?
Michael Anthony : It's been a pleasure, Father.
[They shake hands]
Father Gilhooley : [as Anthony starts to leave] Indeed It has. Yes 'tis. Yes, indeed.
[Pats Anthony on the shoulder]
Father Gilhooley : Keep up the good work, young man.
Michael Anthony : [Childlike] Yes, Father.
