Florrie Fisher passed away during the lecture tour documented in this film. She became ill in 1972 and was taken to a Miami hospital, where she was diagnosed with liver cancer and kidney failure. She died there of cardiac arrest on May 26, 1972.
This film became the basis of the television series Strangers with Candy (1999). Amy Sedaris modeled Jerri Blank's voice, mannerisms, and appearance on Florrie Fisher, and many of Jerri's lines throughout the series were taken verbatim from Fisher's speeches.
