Previously on Home Improvement, crap hit the Binford fan when VP Morgan Wandell staged a Jerry Springer-style fight on Tool Time. In response, Tim threatened to quit, and Morgan granted the request. So now Tim was out of a job, but it looks as though Jill will be getting one...in Indiana. Will the Taylors move? They seemed pretty agreeable to it after some talk, so it looks like it's a done deal. So now, Tim drives Brad and Mark to school, in Brad's car. Unfortunately, they don't get far because Tim underestimated the fuel gage that clearly indicated empty, so now they're out of gas. So after pushing the car to the gas station, they resume their trip, sharing many fond memories of young Brad, Randy and Mark. All the mischief those little rascals used to get into, usually brought on by Tim. Then the teenage years, including Tim trying to explain the birds and the bees to Brad via car terms. And speaking of cars, remember Tim's first hot rod? A '33 Chevy. Began building it in Season 1, got the framework all set, and then his first attempt to start the engine...and was successful in his second attempt. It was finished by Season 4, in time to race Bob Vila with his own hot rod...Tim lost, but not because his rod was slow. Then that fateful day when Tim actually sold the hot rod. No worries, he acquired a new chassis at the same time. This time a '46 Ford. He had very recently completed this one.
As the drive down memory lane continues, Tim looks back on his marriage with Jill, how two completely different people have stayed together through thick and thin, regardless of their own little quirks and foibles. Tolerance, understanding, and always willing to apologize...that would be Tim. Fortunately, when the chips were down, they always had Wilson for advice. The man is walking encyclopedia of tribal cultures and old world values, which he never thought would come in handy, until the Taylors moved in. Back to the present, after Tim is given the finger, we look at some highlights from Tool Time. It's short and sweet because a few seasons ago we had a two-part clip show on moments from Tool Time. You know the premise: Tim and Al introduce a project, Tim becomes far too overconfident and causes some mishap, generally making an ass of himself. He'd usually destroy something, electrocute himself, or sometimes poor Al. Remember the time he fell off a construction building and right into a porta-potty? Or when he dropped that beam on Jill's Nomad? Or when Benny's aunt's house blew up (not Tim's fault)? And that's the story of why Tim is uninsurable by every company on the planet. But he doesn't just cause accidents on Tool Time, the ones he causes around the house shows the fact that it still stands is a true testament to good, old fashioned craftsmanship. He's fallen off the roof, blown up the dishwasher, broken windows, destroyed the phone lines, you name it. So finally, Tim drops the boys off at school and he reflects on all the good times...or bittersweet, like the time he was asked to get a vasectomy, or when Jill fired the damn granite guy after he kissed her (I hate that episode, by the way). So many heartfelt moments together as a family. The time Randy thought he had cancer, the time they had to say goodbye to Randy as he boarded a plane to Costa Rica, or all the romantic gestures Tim gave to Jill. So many memories. Yeah, it's a crummy-ass clip show, but you know what? It was still really good, and very satisfying. When I saw the finale for the first time, this was the part I tuned in to. I missed Part 1, mainly because I'd stopped watching Home Improvement after Season 7, it had just fallen from my graces, but with series finales, you tune in to watch anyway just to see how it all ends. I urge all HI fans to check this one out for yourself and see just how big the heart and soul of this show truly was. Well, one more part to go. Let's see how it all plays out.
