Writer-director Jim Carretta was inspired to write "Rufus" entirely around his Los Angeles Film School classmate Brock Walters after hanging out with him for a week on a film shoot near San Diego. Up to that point Brock had virtually no acting experience.
The movie was shot in a day and a half - 13 hours total. The film was shot entirely in natural light and without the use of a monitor.
