All The Thals were originally supposed to die, leaving The Doctor and Jo as the only survivors of this story. This was changed, partly to avoid the disapproval of Ronnie Marsh, Head of Drama Serials.

Planet of the Daleks: Episode Four

The Doctor and the Thals escape up the shaft with their improvised hot air balloon.

It's a slow escape and a pursiong dalek nearly catches them with his anti gravitational lift.

At least the Doctor and Jo reunite in this episode.

Jo even manages to set off an explosion which conveniently kills the few daleks who were waiting for the Doctor and the Thals at the other end of the shaft.

You can sense that Terry Nation might have been stretched with this six episode story. Vaber and Taron recycle old arguments.
