This is a most excellent episode with which to wrap up a more complex, exciting, and overall more well-rounded and well made second season, and it heralds great changes both in the ongoing story of the show as well as the very fundamentals of how it was made. It carries on almost immediately from the last episode, and I love how busy and serious the atmosphere is. With the very existence of Mainframe at stake, even the viruses can't afford to not stand alongside the positive forces of the CPUsas Megabyte lends his armory to mobilise below a chaotic swirling abyss that looms above Mainframe to defend it from imminent attack by swarms of savage web monsters. You of course know that the suspicions of the blazing-haired Mouse is right, dealing with viruses never ends well one way or another even if it's for mutual survival - and Hexadecimal doesn't really care if the whole friggin' world blows up, she's just tagging along for the insane thrills! Megabyte has constructed a giant cannon-like machine that will have the power to close the rift to the web once fully charged by Hexadecimal, while the master hacker Mouse has begrudgingly agreed to use her skills to upload codes that will render Mainframe virtually inaccessible from the other side once the tear is sealed, a situation that Megabyte fiendishly uses to his advantage... After having his plans foiled time and again, mainly by the efforts of the guardian, Megabyte has been simmering and waiting for such an opportunity to rid himself of his greatest adversary. It happens so fast but it's a real shocker and is really the biggest turning point in the series. Megabyte truly shows his wickedest side as he gives Bob the evil grin right before shooting him into cybernetic oblivion seemingly forever... The ending was really sad to me when I was a kid seeing that happen to Bob - I loved the chrome silver-haired blue-skinned witty guy! And for me it really was like he was gone forever, because this was the last episode I ever saw as a kid and I never got to see the rest of the story until I got the box set a few years ago. Mainframe would've been spared *so* much misery if Bob had never been taken out of the picture, things really do go from bad to worse for the system soon afterwards! And then it switches to little Enzo who receives his lost hero's icon and becomes the new guardian. Can the young sprite carry such a heavy burden and not fail? I love the special final image with the "End Prog?" with a blinking red question mark. It's as if the show is asking you if it's over or not. We got to see some awesome stuff but I'm so glad the show didn't end like this. And it could have easily been the final curtain for Reboot as it was thoughtlessly dropped by the ABC network after this very episode. But that turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to the show, because thankfully they were able to secure a new sponsor that wasn't run by a bunch of uncaring bleeding heart idiots that really knew nothing about what kids like us wanted to see, and that granted the writers a lot more creative freedom than ever before. I like when the diner is destroyed, it feels symbolic of the show finally moving away from its more lighthearted roots and into much more darker action and adventures. Brilliant fun episode. Amazingly amazing!
