Rei's Mentality
injury-6544725 June 2020
In this episode we get to focus on the character of Rei, who has thus far been an injured and enigmatic presence in the background of the show. Well, she does continue to be an enigma - but definitely a fascinating one.

There is mention that she may be suffering from mental instability. This could have caused the problems with the 00 Eva activation we have seen in earlier episodes.

Shinji's father takes an interesting role here - as the hero and perhaps nurturer of Rei, that he isn't to his own son. It sets up some very intriguing questions about the nature of the father's relationships with these two children. We want to know his mindset in regards to them.

There is a fantastic scene between Shinji & Rei At her home. The way the scene is constructed is masterful and evokes a great sense of frustrated desire and sexual mystery and confusion.

The penguin doesn't like his curry. Cute moment.

It's actually (not) bad

Warning: Spoilers
What? Apart from episode 3 they've all been bad before now so it's better than average. Ah what's the use? There's nothing anyone can say to escape the wrath of an Eva fanboy.

Anyway, this is one of those episodes where the action takes a backseat to the characters interacting. As if things weren't already awkward enough for me in my teens, eh Shinji I mean, his father seems to have a crush on this Rei (is grownups openly having a crush on teenagers more accepted in Japan or something? First Misato with Shinji and now hi with Rei) person. Until now all we knew is that she's the other pilot and got badly injured before but in this episode we learn...a little bit about her personality, such as it is (she's quiet, shy and emotionless most of the time). As it turns out it was Gendo, Shinji's father, who got her out though he burned his hand while doing so. Of all people they pick Shinji to give her the card which needs to be renewed and while there a mishap occurs leading to his hand being on her naked breast. Oh, here we go! An accident causes the boy's hand to be in a bad place so he's going to get beaten now! Mercifully this cliche is actually avoided; well played Gainax. She then slaps him later anyway when he talks bad about Gendo. Dude got slapped by someone on his own side, just like Amuro.

Rei's mind
ajtwlsalsdl16 October 2021
This episode was focusing on Rei's mind. Before this we usually see Shinji's mind, but it's nice to have a chance to see Rei's mind. I'm wondering Shiji's father and Rei's relationship.
