- Stone and Keller are forced to defend a mob boss from an inspector with a terminal illness and nothing to lose.
- Undercover detective Inspector John T. Connor has spent the past year and a half trying to bring down the untouchable crime lord Al Royce. When he learns he has a deadly aneurism, he decides to go rogue. He takes a shot at Royce but kills his bodyguard Sullivan instead.
Mike Stone and Steve Keller investigate the shooting. They learn nothing from Royce, who claims to have seen nothing, but he knows Connor's intentions and put a hit out on him.
Connor visits his ex-wife Rosemary and tells her of his illness. Suspecting he was followed to her home he scouts the woodland area and is almost run over by one of Royce's men. Rosemary discovers him lying in the road and helps him up.
Sullivan's funeral is filmed by Connor's partner, Murray Schindler. What he doesn't expect to find when he sees the film is Connor parked near the church. Connor told him he'd be out of town.
Stone learns of Connor's fatal illness from Rosemary. He confronts Connor at his home. Connor tells Stone of his murderous intentions, and asks him to look the other way while he carries out his plan. Stone says no, and Connor punches him in the stomach, gets in his car, and rides away with a hunting rifle in the trunk.
Stone, Keller and Schindler put their heads together and determine that Royce, who owns part of a race horse, will be spending the day at the track. Stone and Schindler draw their guns when they find Connor on the roof taking a sniper's stance. Connor ignores their warnings, aims his rifle at Royce and is shot by Schindler.
The episode ends with Royce alive and still a free man.
