"Demon Rum" is an episode of "The American Experience" from its second season. As such, its style is a bit different from later installments in this PBS series. First, David McCullough introduces the episode. Second, Peter Thomas narrates. Third, the show consists much more of interviews with ordinary Americans...not the usual experts.
The show is about Prohibition and consists of folks talking about how bad alcoholism and violence was before Prohibition as well as how tempting it was to make a fortune bootlegging after the law was passed. Much of it centers around life in Detroit...a city which saw a lot of liquor being smuggled into it from Canada.
This episode is interesting and a nice broad overview of Prohibition from the standpoint of the average Joe and Josephine. Particularly interesting is how some interviewees felt Prohibition actually helped with equality of the sexes, as women, for the first time, began to go to bars and assert themselves! Overall, as you'd expect, it's an excellent documentary...the type we've come to expect from PBS.
