Synopsis

  • Eric is mortified when he and, thanks to Kitty's ignorance about the rating system, everybody else, learn his SAT score is by far the worst of the basement gang. Fez got a 1000, Donna 1230, Eric 800. Hyde got a 950 without textbooks. Kelso got 1030 and that's what breaks Eric. Jackie says that a pigeon can peck a better score than as 800.

Bob brags to Red and Kitty that Donna is the smart one between her and Eric. Red is devastated to learn that Eric did worse than Kelso on his SATs. Red had seen Kelso glue his hand to his face. Disappointed dad Red makes Eric realize drooling for Donna (during the exams no less) is bad for his results. During the exam Eric was sitting next to Donna, when she pulled her skirt up to scratch her thighs. They made Eric daydream about being on a spy caper with Donna in a spy car. Before Eric knew, there were only 5 minutes left on the exam. Eric is determined to redeem himself, for starters by taking the SATs again, and asks dad to ground him. Kitty believes that Eric is destined to be a senator, but Red says that he is likely to end up as a janitor.

Donna is furious at him because his real aim is to do better then she. Eric admits to Donna that his aim is to score a 1240 on the test, which is exactly 10 more points than Donna. Kitty tries to explain to Eric to forge a partnership with Donna for long term happiness, but Eric can't get over the fact that he is the "man" and "the man has to do better", as "that's just how things are". Kitty says that in a marriage everybody has their own skills. And how you behave in real life matters more than what you score on a test.

The others start dreaming about a fine future, Jackie saw his father in prison. She says that she will be OK now that there is another man to take care of her and to provide for her. She imagines Hyde being the Lord of the manor, which he achieved by having the basic skills in Math and verbal reasoning. Fez will be their butler.

Kelso even takes up reading, But then he realizes that being smart will not help him with the ladies, and so he stops and decides to coast by life on his good looks. Hyde refuses to apply himself to anything and convinces Jackie she should become their provider.

Jackie cashes a few savings bonds and wants Hyde to go to college, but Hyde is adamant about not doing so. Hyde says that imagines their future as being a fat and ugly couple, who are still living in Kitty's basement. He the counter convinces Jackie to get a job to pay for all the things she needs, and to support Hyde as well. Jackie likes that version of the future. While Fez is no longer content to be everyone's servant.

Eric admits to Donna that he is afraid that now that the scores are in, Donna might want to "trade up". He also admits that he accidentally told the gang that they are engaged.
