- Jackie tries to win a 'burn' duel with Laurie, but ends up coming off 2nd best. Laurie gets under Jackie's skin and thus she is not able to come up with witty enough retorts to Laurie's insults. Laurie walks away the winner in the contest.
Hyde says that Laurie feeds on Jackie's anger that only makes her stronger. Hyde convinces her it's better to 'be Zen', at peace and aloof. He even takes her under his wings to teach her "Zen", and her first task is to shine his boots. Use of phrases like "Whatever" and "that's cool" to show aloofness and ambiguity. This way nobody can understand anything that Jackie says and allows her the upper hand in every confrontation.
Despite everybody's warnings, Michael accepts Laurie's invitation for dinner, which Kitty actually forbade her to extend. Kitty argues that Kelso has no future and will probably end up punching tickets at a theme park. Laurie plans to tell Red by claiming that both Laurie and Kelso love each other and there is nothing that he can do about it. Kitty is horrified.
Eric and Donna try to talk Kelso out of it, but Kelso argues that Laurie likes him, and Red likes Laurie. So this means, Red likes Kelso. Eric and Donna can only imagine the oncoming disaster. Although lover-boy sweetly brought gifts, inhospitable host Red scares Kelso out of the door in seconds. Red gives Kelso 5 seconds to get far away as possible from him; The rest of the dinner is eaten in complete silence. Red is worried that both Laurie and Kelso will become financially dependent on him. Kitty assures Red that Laurie and Kelso are not likely to get married as he will leave Laurie when she gets pregnant. Red expected more from Laurie as she went to college and Kelso is still in high school
Red dreams that by 1997, Kelso and Laurie would be married and living with him. Kelso would be unemployed. Laurie asks for financial help as times are tough for her and Kelso. Red cannot stand that all does is have sex with Laurie and yells at him to find a job. Kitty tells Red that cannot ask Kelso to not see Laurie anymore.
Later the Korean veteran locks the intimidated boy in the garage for operation "Scare the pants off daughter's new lover" . Red tells Kelso that he should look at Eric to see what he is capable of doing when he really takes an interest in someone's life. Red basically tells Kelso to not take his own and Laurie's name in the same sentence ever again. Red threatens that nobody will ever find Kelso's body if he doesn't get this right.
When Laurie returns to the basement, Jackie's Zen for beginners soon gives way to a cat-fight. Jackie acts all cool and aloof, but Laurie calls her a loser for not being able to hang on to her one true love. Jackie is livid and attacks Laurie for this insult. As Hyde puts it, "Where the Zen ends, the ass-kicking begins.". Jackie wins the cat fight. Laurie bites Donna during the fight.
