Just Think About the Children

Another look at our foibles. The Mayor blames immigration for any problems confronting Springfield. It all starts with a bear appearing in town. A bear patrol is formed. Then taxes are raised. And finally the aforementioned immigration. There are numerous cliches produced making this a pretty cool episode.

Springfield looks to enact Proposition 24 for the deportation of certain immigrants:

This is a strong episode with a great message done with satire.

It's quite an eerie episode when you consider how divided numerous societies now are over the topic of immigration and how much hatred is peddled by individuals on the subject. It seemed like an outrageous parody when I first watched the episode as a teenager, but now it feels like depressingly accurate prediction.

How good is the comedy? I think the jokes are mostly solid, but the social commentary overshadows the humour. For me the funniest parts involve the bear.

Warning: Spoilers
The Simpsons has a knack of foretelling future trends good, bad or ugly, and this one hits the nail on the head, with Apu being the subject of an anti-immigration campaign. Quite ahead of its time, and I wonder how Indian-Americans would have felt watching this.
