See you in the operating place!
MrBluenote24 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Another Simpson's classic. There are lots of laughs throughout the episode.

Homer's diagnosis is clogged arteries and he needs triple bypass surgery. Homer turns to Dr. Nick who advertises, on an infomercial, any surgery for $129.95. Homer has no health insurance from the power plant and the operation goes from $30K to 40K. Homer failed in securing loans from Reverend Lovejoy & Rabbi Krustofsky.

The bit where Dr. Hibbert performs the "fat giggle test" on Homer is priceless.

Another great bit was Dr. Nick , while talking with the Simpsons before surgery, hearing an announcement over the intercom asking him to report to the morgue as the coroner is waiting to see him. Dr. Nick's response, "The coroner. I'm so sick of that guy. I'll see you in the operating place.

While performing surgery Dr. Nick starts singing his version of "Dem Dry Bones."

"The knee bones connected to the.......something.

The something's connected to the red thing.

The red thing's connected to my wristwatch. Uh oh!"

Easily in my top 5 episode from Season 4. A must see for any Simpson's fan.

One of the best!

This is definitely one of the best episodes of The Simpson's. It has all the ingredients that's made this so great... comic humour from a serious situation and real family values. Really enjoy watching this one.

A nearly perfect episode

What more can I say? All the trappings of a great Simpsons episode: funny, sentimental, unpredictable, great side character moments and Nick Riveria is ridiculous! So many jokes but still emotional, especially from Lisa. Nick is just a little too dense, but it's a great one.

Makes depressing medical expensive stuff feel very funny

Warning: Spoilers
That part with him having a heart attack while he was signing up for insurance was so darn hilarious.

This story would've been weak if he wouldn't have exchanged his medical insurance for that pinball machine in the employee lounge.

This is a very relatable episode.

Homer's Triple Bypass

Warning: Spoilers
Homer's bad habits finally catch up to him, and Dr Nick has his finest moment. Definitely worth the watch and definitely a classic episode, but aren't all season four episodes classics? (Hint: Yes, yes they are.)

Eat Healthy, Kids!

This is the eleventh episode in the fourth season of the Simpsons. My oh my, did the subject matter even take a turn towards the dark side. It is strange seeing the light-hearted Simpsons deal with a subject matter involving death, but the show takes a few emotional turns in doing so. Plus, the episode still manages to crack a few jokes every once in awhile.

In this episode, "Homer's Triple Bypass," Homer's unhealthy eating has finally caught up to him when he suffers a major heart attack at work. Unable to get the money needed for proper surgery, the Simpsons decide to use the incompetent Dr. Nick Riveira (with the help of Lisa), to get Homer's heart back in good shape.

Overall, this is a very weighty and serious episode, but I thought it was very emotional. It has dark, but true themes. I loved how we got to see Dr. Nick Riviera shine in this role as Homer's hero. A very good episode in a very good season. I rate this episode 10/10.

Works Well but a Bit Sad
Hitchcoc1 May 2022
Homer, who has the worst diet on earth, suffers a massive heart attack, requiring a Triple Bypass. There are lots of jokes that show off the big guy's stupidity, but there is a dark cloud over everything because of the urgency. We get to meet Dr. Nick who offers affordable surgery to Homer. I'm not sure any lessons are learned but it was well done.

Homer needs a CABG and can only afford Dr Nick Rivière.

This is a clever episode that successfully makes humour out of serious subject matter.

It is another strong Homer-focussed story that portrays his lifestyle as so outlandishly dangerous to his health that it's impossible not to laugh at what happens.

Dr Nick having the responsibility to save the day is a stroke of brilliance. Other characters like Bart, Mr Burns, Moe and Barney are also good.

For me it's an 8.5/10 but I round upwards.

One of the best season 4 episodes up to this point

Warning: Spoilers
Homer's unhealthy and excessive eating habits put a strain on his heart, and when Mr. Burns threatens to fire him he has a heart attack. The doctors advise him to have an operation as soon as possible, but it's far too expensive (and he has exchanged his health insurance at work for a pinball machine!). His only hope now is a highly dubious "doctor" who "will perform any operation for $129.95". The situation might seem too morbid to be very funny, but this is a simple, subtle and steady episode that doesn't go overboard with the morbidity. The Simpsons, and especially Homer, are exclusively at the center, but there is time for brief appearances by many supporting characters as well. It also has some memorable bits of animation, from Homer's jiggling stomach to the tear in Marge's eye after the operation is over successfully. *** out of 4.

"Homer's Triple Bypass" portrays one man's will to survive, even under the worst circumstances.
Zabon5 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Homer needs a triple bypass operation due to heart complications... and it's a very costly procedure... so he has to rely on Dr. Nick to save his life for a cheaper price. Dr. Nick seems to be rather incompetent although he also seems to get things done through sheer luck. This is awesomeness as Lisa, who knows some cardiology, helps Dr. Nick out by telling him to cut below the blockage... and the operation is a success as Homer's heart thumps in rapid harmony. It's a great episode because Homer comes very close to meeting his demise, but averts this by a slim chance. This episode is so awesome, it portrays Homer's will to survive, even under the worst of conditions. Homer doesn't give up and sustains through hope alone. Very emotional and extremely well written.

Bypass
safenoe26 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Homer's unhealthy diet finally catches up to him in Homer's Triple Bypass, from season four of The Simpsons, so guess what, the family scrapes together enough money for Dr Nick to perform the operation, with a little bit of help from Lisa of course. This scene reminded of the famous operating theater scene in Seinfeld, in the 1993 episode The Junior Mint, so I wonder if there was some sort of subliminal inspiration there init. Anyway, I'm enjoying reflecting on the golden era of The Simpsons, being the first 10 seasons, with some honorable mentions post-season 10, and I don't watch current episodes.
