Not To Be Confused With The Mashie Niblick
boblipton30 July 2022
Bobby Jones shows a duffer how to use a niblick.

No, not a mashie niblick, but a niblick. As often happens with these odd terms, I did a bit of Internet research and discovered that a niblick, also called a Pitching Niblick, is the equivalent of what golfers nowadays call a 9 iron, and sane human beings call succotash.

Huntley Gordon plays the guy Jones schools. Gordon appeared in more than 140 movies over a quarter century beginning in 1916. Vivien Oakland plays his wife.

How I Play Golf, by Bobby Jones #3: The Niblick (1931)

** (out of 4)

Huntley Gordon comes home late from work where his wife (Vivien Oakland) begins to question him. The husband says he was working late but the wife then bursts his bubble by saying she saw him at the golf course. We then flashback to the husband having his ball in the sand and this is when Bobby Jones explains the best way to get it out. HOW I PLAY GOLF #3 is mainly going to appeal to golf fans who want to see the legendary Jones explaining how he played golf (as the title says). This here, like a few in the series, is rather dry in regards to not much really happens outside of Jones explaining how to hit this shot. A few of the films in the series got built around stories to hell do something else for the non-golf fan but the story here is pretty weak and it certainly doesn't get any laughs. At just 9-minutes the film goes by quick enough but in the end it's mainly golf buffs who are going to want to watch this.
