- Burns decides to retire and sells the power plant to a German consortium for an exorbitant price. Homer's laziness and inefficiency are quickly exposed by his new bosses, and he is laid off.
- Wishing to retire and pursue other interests, Mr. Burns sells the nuclear power plant to two German businessmen. The new owners evaluate the plant and its employees with the goal of making it more efficient and decide to lay off Homer. Meanwhile, Mr. Burns finds retirement to be unsatisfying.
- While working another day at the Power Plant, Homer soon finds out that he owns stock in the company, and that the current rate of 25 cents a share will net him $25 dollars. Homer eagerly sells the stock and collects...but soon finds out too late that 'unconfirmed takeover rumors' push the stock to be valued at $5200 by the time the market closes.
The next day, Homer finds his co-workers have bought expensive items, but their attention is soon drawn to a news report showing Mr Burns going to a restaurant to meet with some German Businessmen about a possible takeover of the plant.
Burns claims that he won't sell, but the German's offer of $100million causes Burns to 'grudgingly accept.' The plant employees are on edge at first, fearing for their jobs. Interviews are conducted of each and every employee, including Homer. By the end of the evaluation, the Germans announce the workers to be laid off, of which Homer's name is the only one called.
Homer attempts to find work, but soon ends up just sitting in Moe's. One evening, Mr Burns shows up and Homer and some others end up mocking him about he has plenty of money, but noone loves him. Burns leaves, realizing that while he has money, he no longer has power, and decides to get his plant back.
As luck would have it, the German investors have found that the power plant is a money pit that will cost even more to be brought up to code. As they are desperate, Burns offers to pay them only $50 million, to which they accept.
Burns then requests that Homer be rehired, telling Smithers that he likes to 'keep his friends close...and his enemies even closer.'
