The title is a parody of Les Misérables (1862) a novel by French author Victor Hugo, and among the best-known novels of the 19th century. The novel has been the source of many movies, plays and an internationally performed musical written by Robert Hossein, composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg and librettist Alain Boublil. The musical version of 'Les Misérables' opened at the Broadway Theater on March 12, 1987 and ran for 6680 performances, making it the third longest running show on Broadway.
