The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008)

Goofs

The Baader Meinhof Complex

Edit

Continuity

Ulrike Meinhof's twin daughters Bettina and Regine first appear in the opening scene in 1967 when they are 9 years old. Yet 3 years later when living in Sicily and rescued by Stefan Aust, they haven't aged at all.
Ulrike Meinhof cuts her hair short earlier in the movie prior to her arrest, presumably trying to disguise herself. However her hairstyle remains unchanged throughout her time spent in prison and even appears to be the same length.
During the scene at the Palestinian training camp when the Germans were reprimanded for sunbathing on the rooftop, there is a discontinuity about the sunglasses actress Nadja Uhl wears. During the close-ups, she can be seen standing at the right foreground wearing sunglasses; when the camera zooms out, she's holding them at her hips; back to the close-up, she's back to wearing them.
In 1972 the German Border Police used the helicopter type Bell Uh-1D (as shown in the movie and the documentary footage). But the scene of the explosion shows a Bell 222 (known also from "Air-Wolf). The first flight of a Bell "Tripple Two" was August 13, 1976; the production started in 1978. Also, the Bell 222 has a landing gear and two engines, the Bell UH-1D a landing skid and one engine.

Factual errors

While making a telephone call in an adjoining room, Ignes Ponto becomes an eyewitness of the assassination of her husband Jürgen Ponto in their home. In the movie, she is sitting on the patio in the sunshine, from where she is not able to see that Jürgen Ponto is shot.
When the police storm the West German embassy in Stockholm, they wear helmets with translucent plastic face protection. However, at the time the Swedish special police used helmets with bullet-proof metal masks, with a slim eye-slit (very much like a medieval helmet). Officers wearing these kinds of helmets are seen in the archive footage from the actual event shown earlier.
After Buback's assassination, his car comes to a stop facing a pole which is inconsistent with a historical photograph shown in a subsequent shot.
When Petra Schelm and Gerhard Mueller abandon their BMW 2002 on a bridge while being chased by the police, the 2002 used featured rectangular taillights, indicating the car was 1973-1976 model (the earlier models had round taillights). But the event took place in the middle of 1971. Immediately after the scene a TV shows an original news program about the event; it shows the correct BMW 2002 with the round tail lights.

Revealing mistakes

Reuse of a prop: An 8mm movie camera in a scene from 1967 is identical to one used by different characters in a scene from 1977.

Anachronisms

For a split second during the bombing of an American military HQ in Frankfurt, a soldier is seen bleeding profusely on a poster for The Dictator's album, Manifest Destiny. This bombing took place in 1972, while Manifest Destiny was released in 1977--The Dictators didn't even form until 1973.
The FEG P9R pistol used by Petra Schelm wasn't invented until 10 years after she was killed.
The Croatian Mini Ero used in the ambush/kidnapping of Hanns-Martin Schleyer did not exist at the time the incident took place.
In several scenes throughout this film set in the 1970s, the characters wear Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses, the Ray-Ban logo which is visible in the top right corner of the right glass wasn't introduced until 1987.
The barbed wire around Stammheim Prison is of a modern type with blades rather than barbs.
