Richard's solicitor, Mr. Vholes approaches John Jarndyce for payment of Richard's outstanding debts. When Esther mildly criticizes Richard, Ada takes exception and they have a falling out. They visit him in the barracks but he is in fact selling out and leaving the army. He is consumed by the court case and refuses Ada's offer of her inheritance to settle his debts. To Esther's shock, Allan Woodcort is staying at the same inn. Lady Dedlock decides her maid Rosa is to go away, against Tulkinghorn's specific instructions. A very ill Jo returns to London and receives help from Woodcort who has re-established himself there and is taken to Sgt. George's establishment. Jo tells him of Tulkinghorn's involvement in his troubles and George pays him a visit.
