Chronologically, this episode takes place prior to Kamonegi's Easy Mark (1998), since Jessie's Lickitung is mentioned in that episode, as well as Who Gets to Keep Togepy!? (1998) in which Togepi (who is absent here) is hatched.
Originally scheduled to broadcast on the Japanese holiday of Girls' Day (Hinamatsuri) March 3, 1998, but was rescheduled in the aftermath of "Electric Soldier Porygon."
This is the first episode to mention that Ash is an only child with Misty stating so. This would be further confirmed in Pokémon 3 the Movie: Spell of the Unown (2000), as well as in We've Arrived in the Kalos Region! Dreams and Adventures Begin!! (2013) (where Ash tells Bonnie and Clemont that he has no brothers or sisters).
Due to it being rescheduled after the Dennô Senshi Porygon (1997) incident, this episode is considered the season premiere of Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands. The DVD releases of that season correct this, giving the title to Masera Town! A New Journey (1999). Because of this, Pikachu's Jukebox replaces the Pokérap starting in this episode.
This was one of the few episodes hinting at Pikachu's gender before it being officially confirmed in the Diamond & Pearl series, as Pikachu was shown holding one of the bags after the narrator mentioned that the males carry packages during the Princess Festival.
