Walter Brennan gives a nice performance
kfo949424 March 2016
This episode opens up with leaders of the local town gathered to talk about the aging Sheriff. They all agree that Sheriff Larson (Walter Brennan) has done a great job in the town but now his age is becoming a concern. They have got together to talk with the Sheriff about not running for re-election and bring in a younger person to the office. Sheriff Larson seemed stun with the leaders request and wanted to leave on his own terms and not forced out.

While the meeting is going on, shots ring out from a local business and a man is shot dead. A witness advised that the two people running from the scene were Horse Daily and Lem Hooker. The Sheriff sets out to bring the person responsible to justice. But the trail will take him into the desert where he will track the men on his own accord. And during his time in the desert he will find out many things that he will take into account when he returns to the town.

Even though Walter Brennan did an excellent job with the material, there was a lot of dead time during the program. And with the story being short on substance, the writer made the older Sheriff track one of the men- twice. This was a nice story that needed more interchange between the Sheriff and the townsfolk. We have much of the Sheriff speaking to himself during the trek in the desert with much of the dialog unnecessary. Even with the small problems, there was enough interest in the story to make the watch enjoyable.

Walter Brennan in his High Noon

Warning: Spoilers
Walter Brenna in 1957, about 12 years before playing the patriarch on The Guns of Will Sonnett, and here playing a crusty old sheriff being put out to pasture but unwilling to go gently. And to prove his competence he heads out to find a feared lawbreaker on his own. He discovers him and determines that being crafty Granpa Amos McCoy is the more practical approach to his capture as he has to admit his age is definitely slowing him down. He succeeds much to the shock of town's residents who now demand he run for reelection. But Breenan's character has grown and accepts he needs to step down and he refuses to run for reelection and they should find a new candidate. Too bad Will Sonnett isn't available as he would have been an excellent choice.

The old man and the desert
bkoganbing20 January 2017
Walter Brennan is the guest star in this Zane Grey Theater episode playing a town sheriff whose character is not unlike Will Sonnett in his later television series.

He's getting on in years and the townspeople would like him to retire, but he's not about to. In fact he takes after a robber by himself without a posse, saying they would slow him down.

The old man can definitely still cut it out there. Half of the episode is Brennan out on the desert with him talking to his horse. We also hear how his mind turns in terms of catching the robber Val Dufour.

All I can say is Dufour never had a chance.

Brennan turns in a fantastic performance, this story is a real star vehicle for him.
