- Wolverine has strong feeling for Jean Grey, but she's with Cyclops. Storm has a paralyzing case of claustrophobia and must overcome this as the X-Men venture into the New York sewers to rescue Jean Grey and Cyclops from a deformed race of mutants called the Morlocks. Storm confronts the leader of the Morlocks, Callisto, who wants Cyclops to rule beside her as king.—Tim Von Cloedt
- As Wolverine recuperates, thanks to his mutant power of accelerated healing, Xavier pushes the remaining X-Men harder in their training sessions to prepare them for threats like Magneto and to spare them fates like Morph. Storm's claustrophobia is finally revealed to the others during a Danger Room exercise when the threat of enclosing walls sends the otherwise composed African mutant into an overwhelming panic, unleashing her raw power and greatly endangering her teammates. The usually gruff and grumpy Wolverine is revealed to indeed have a softer side when he is visited by Jean Grey who asks him to take it easy during his recovery. Wolverine attempts to show no weakness but his injuries are still serious enough to crumple him when exerted. Jean goes to his side and helps him up. They share a tender moment, revealing not only Wolverine's feelings for her but also her brief interest in them as well. This revelation helps to explain a lot about Wolverine's attitude towards Cyclops in general. Jean comes to her senses and breaks away from Logan, awkwardly explaining about being late for a date with Cyclops and leaving Wolverine full of heartache. Later, whilst out on said date, Cyclops and Jean encounter strange mutants in the subway that clash with a group of ordinary but bigoted humans. Forced to step in and help, the couple manage to contain the situation before they are placed under a trance and captured. Upon awakening, Cyclops is introduced to his captor, a mutant named Callisto, ruler of a subterranean tribe of mostly deformed and unsightly mutant outcasts called Morlocks. Callisto wants Cyclops to remain as her lover and provide her with an heir, even threatening to kill Jean Grey should he refuse. Jean manages to alert Xavier telepathically and he sends Storm, Rogue, Gambit and the (mostly) recovered Wolverine to rescue them. They must descend into the tightly spaced tunnels beneath New York which causes Storm some anxiety, though as any good leader, she presses on. The team manage to find Jean but Callisto refuses to part with Cyclops and the two groups clash. The Morlocks are no match for the highly-trained X-Men with Rogue knocking Sunder around the sewer, Jean knocks Masque and Erg down telekinetically, Wolverine briefly tangles with Callisto but she flees, Gambit fends off an attack from Glow Worm and Storm defeats both Tar-Baby and Scaleface. After an encounter with Plague, Gambit and Rogue are forced to retreat back to the mansion in order to save Gambit's life. Wolverine goes after Callisto but discovers an unconscious and captive Cyclops instead. His hesitance to rescue his team leader alerts Callisto and Annalee to his feelings for Jean and they use it against him, with Annalee using her powers to hypnotize Wolverine into attacking Cyclops. Jean subdues him and Analee, giving Callisto a chance to get her hands on Cyclops and she uses this leverage to order her remaining Morlocks to kill the X-Men one at a time until their leader, Storm, agrees to Callisto's terms. Storm counters that by cleverly challenging Callisto to a duel, not only for the lives of the X-Men but for the leadership of the Morlocks as well! Unable to decline lest she lose face, Callisto agrees but forbids Storm from using her powers. Instead they will battle it out both armed with laser staffs. Storm and Callisto clash with Callisto gaining the upper hand, until she accuses Storm of being "soft" thanks to her life on the surface world. Storm's younger years had been anything BUT easy and soft and this flagrant judgment infuriates the Wind Rider enough to turn the tables on Callisto, defeating the Morlock Queen in a quick and clean display of fighting prowess. Though Storm is the victor she allows Callisto to live, as killing is not the X-Men's way. As the new leader of the Morlocks, Storm offers them sanctuary at the X-Mansion but they refuse, stating they would only resurface if and when humanity accepts mutantkind. Storm understands and promises to return to them should that happen. In her absence, she places Callisto in charge once more. As the X-Men prepare to leave the sewers Cyclops and Jean shared a romantic kiss, witnessed by a heartbroken Wolverine. Back at the mansion, Xavier is greatly pleased with Storm's remarkable leadership. Jean and Scott sought to thank Wolverine but find his room empty and realize that he has left the team...
