- Agent Dogget has been shot and hospitalized. The only suspect is his partner. However, she was 14 miles away when the shooting occurred. The team sticks together to solve the case of being in two places at one time.
- We open with a man (Dylan Haggerty) stepping into the lobby of an apartment building, inside he notices a woman with her back to him fixing up her bike. The woman is Agent Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish). The man stares at her and then looks up at the hallway mirror with suspician where we cut to Agent Doggett (Robert Patrick) and A.D. Brad Follmer (Cary Elwes) watching the scene in the lobby through a camera in said mirror. Doggett remarks that this man has to be Lukesh and the he probably knows that the FBI are there and watching him. Back in the lobby the man, Lukesh, peers over again suspiciously at Monica and we cut back to Doggett who wants to get in there and arrest Lukesh now rather than wait like Follmer wants to; apparently Lukesh is a serial killer who likes to cut out women's tongues and then disappear into thin air. Doggett is concerned for his partner, but Follmer reminds him that Monica volunteered and knows what she's doing. Lukesh looks over at Monica one last time while fingering his keys by his mailbox and then walks over into the stairwell. Monica pulls out her gun and starts to follow Lukesh into the stairwell; Doggett tells her through her earpiece not to follow Lukesh, but Follmer undermines that and tells Monica to pursue.
In the badly-lit stairwell Monica is tip-toeing quietly and peering carefully around corners looking out for Lukesh. She sees a door to another stairwell just being shut and proceeds to enter it as Doggett asks her on her earpiece where she is. Monica tells him that she's in the stairwell and can't see Lukesh anywhere when she hears a sound behind her. She spins around to see Lukesh looming out of the shadows with something in his hand he swipes at her. Suddenly Dogget and Follmer hear her screams on their speakers and launch themselves out of their van and into the apartment to help her. Both agents rush into the stairwell where Doggett finds Monica clutching at her bleeding throat that was just savagedly slashed and Follmer calls for immediate medical assistance. Doggett looks horrified and runs off after Lukesh as Follmer, hovering over a dead-looking Monica, warns after Doggett that Lukesh has Monica's gun.
Doggett bursts out of a back exit into an alley way where he sees Lukesh walking towards the back end of the alley. Doggett with his gun pointed yells at Lukesh "turn around you son of bitch" as Lukesh does just that while holding up his bloody hands and giving Doggett the bare hint of a smile. The police backup have arrived and Doggett turns his head for just a second to call for them but when he looks back Lukesh has disappeared. Doggett is bewildered and steps forward deeper into the alley, gun still pointed looking around. As Doggett turns this way and that, Lukesh suddenly appears behind him gripping Monica's gun and aiming it at Doggett's head. When Doggett senses something is terribly wrong he turns around to face Lukesh who inevitably fires the gun straight at Doggett.
Cue Credits.
The scene opens with a very much alive Monica unwrapping a mirror from bubble wrap. She places it on a table and greets a very much unshot and cheerful Doggett as he enters her apartment. Doggett comments on how nice Monica's new apartment is and offers to help her move anything heavy like her dresser or fridge. Monica is grateful but tells him that the movers already did everything. He smirks at her and offers her a "house-warming gift" which happen to be "hot dogs" Monica says as she sniffs at them. "Polish sausages" Doggett grinning corrects her and encourages her to try one. Monica looks amusedly at Doggett as he enthusiastically chows down on his hot dog. She notices that he has a bit of mustard on the side of his mouth and she walks over to him to touch his face and wipe it off. There is an awkward moment as they stare at eachother rather intimately, then Monica offers to go get some plates as Doggett scoffs at the idea of eating polish sausage on plates. Monica is in her kitchen when the phone rings. It's A.D. Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) on the other line. He immediately tells her he is sorry and that they have found Doggett shot and wounded in a back alley; we cut to where Skinner is phoning and paramedics are loading a bloody and badly hurt Doggett into an amublance. Monica is confused and is about to tell him that Doggett is with her when she walks back into her living room to find Doggett is gone.
Monica arrives at the hospital where she meets Follmer. He tells her that he is heading the investigation into Doggett's shooting and wants to know why he was in the alley in the first place. Monica is still really confused and insists that Doggett was with her when Skinner called. Agent Scully (Gillian Anderson) appears on the scene and tells Monica that Doggett is getting out of surgery and that if he lives he will be paralyzed for the rest of his life. Monica is now very frustrated as well as confused, and is certain that the man they found shot couldn't possibly be Doggett.
Scully and Follmer take Monica to a hospital room where lo and behold lies Doggett completely stricken and motionless in a hospital bed. Monica stares at him in shock; Doggett is locked into a neckbrace through which a ventilator is breathing for him while other life-support systems keep him alive. Monica walks over and takes his hand, she makes a very pained face and starts to cry. Scully and Follmer both looking very forlorn as well stand behind her and watch.
FBI Ballistics Lab, Washington, D.C. Follmer and Skinner are analyzing the bullet that wounded Doggett and are determining what kind of gun it might have come from. They realize the brand of gun used is exactly like the ones that the FBI issues to it's agents, leading Follmer to order that the bullet be run thought the FBI database to match it to any of it's issued guns. Follmer implies that he thinks another FBI agent shot Doggett, something Skinner is reluctant to believe.
Back at the hospital, Monica is gazing sadly at Doggett through his hospital room window. She tells Scully that Doggett was with her the whole time and there was no way he could have been in the alley too. Scully tries to reassure by telling her about her father's death and how his ghost visited her, Monica is impressed but asserts that is wasn't the same thing that happened to her. Scully then recieves a call from Skinner asking her to bring Monica down to the police station for questioning; there they take Monica into an interrogation room where Follmer is waiting for her. Follmer questions her on what she meant when she said that Doggett was with her when he was shot; Monica tries to explain that she was with Doggett but not when he was shot. As Follmer starts to insinuate that Monica may have been the shooter, Scully disgusted with the accusation wants to put a stop to it. Skinner prevents her when an eyewitness enters the viewing room to indentify Monica as Doggett's shooter. Follmer reveals to Monica that the bullet that hit Doggett came from her, Monica's, gun and that as well, an eyewitness places her at the scene. Scully watches dumbfounded as the eyewitness identifies Monica as the shooter. Monica demands to know who the eyewitness is................ and it's Lukesh.
Back at the hospital, Monica is in Doggett's room again holding his hand and gazing at him. She snipes at Scully and Skinner for having a guard posted incase she were there "to finish the job" to which Skinner sends the guard away. Monica wonders why she hasn't been arrested yet but Skinner and Scully tell her that there are too many inconsistencies in the theory that she was the shooter: she was too far away from the crime scene and her gun had no evidence that it had been fired. Suddenly Skinner notices that Doggett is awake and moving one finger on his left hand. Scully moves to check on him, postulating that it might just be muscle spasms, but Skinner recognizes that the tapping of Doggett's finger is Morse code. He fishes out a notebook to write down Doggett's message and reveals that Doggett was tapping "Lukesh" with his finger.
We're at a mailbox marked 4-D where Lukesh at his apartment building is removing his mail. He arrives at his aparment suite to the petulant greetings of his bedridden mother. While Lukesh fixes his mother up a drink in the kitchen, she blathers on about how lonely and scared she was while he was gone. Lukesh patiently listens to her bitch about imaginary robbers while he opens up a drawer to take out the gun he took from Monica at the beginning of the show. Pleased with himself, he twirls it in his hand, smiling. Lukesh opens the fridge to make his mother a sandwich of potted meat, but he pulls out a bloody tongue in a plastic bag.
Cut to a hot dog being thrown into the garbage. Monica is back in her apartment, upset that she isn't at the hospital with Doggett. Skinner reminds her that she is still under investigation, but he helps her by giving her a file on the eyewitness accusing her, Lukesh. She reads that he is a very unstable person. Monica theorizes that it's Lukesh that is behind everything, that he shot Doggett, and is now framing Monica. Skinner gets a phonecall from Follmer telling him that Doggett has awoken again and wants to talk to Monica.
Scully, Monica, Skinner and Follmer are walking down the hallway of the hospital to Doggett's room, however Follmer prevents Scully and Skinner from entering and allows only Monica's admittance. Monica is at Doggett's bedside, she strokes his face and smiles at him. He starts tapping on a special button key-board communication device set-up for those with severe spinal injuries. On a computer screen Doggett asks how it's possible that Monica is alive, since last he saw her she had her throat cut by Lukesh. Follmer asks Doggett who shot him; at first it seems that Doggett is about to say "you" referring to Monica, but instead alludes to it being Lukesh. Monica looks open-mouthed and wide-eyed at Doggett.
Back in Lukesh's apartment, he is in bed wide awake next to his sleeping mother. He turns towards her to make sure she is asleep before slipping out and away. As he leaves the room his Mother's eyes open, she is awake. Lukesh walks into the back alley and brandishes a shaving razor, he walks and walks into the depths of the alley before disappearing into a portal.
At the hospital a doctor is testing Doggett for feeling in his body by pricking his chest with a needle, unfortunately he feels nothing. When the doctor leaves, Doggett remarks on his computer screen that it was the "1st time [he] ever hoped for a little prick," Monica gets the dirty joke and asks him if kisses his mother with that mouth. Doggett asks her how the case is going, and she tells him that it's going nowhere due to all the impossibilities of him being in two places at once. Monica then begins to theorize about the possibility of there being parallel dimensions and that the reason that Doggett was in two places at once was because this Doggett, the shot Doggett, came from another dimension. And when shot Doggett entered this dimension following Lukesh he pushed out the other Doggett, Monica's Doggett so to speak. Doggett finds this hard to believe.
Lukesh is now being interrogated by Follmer and Skinner about his story. Skinner accuses Lukesh of being the one who shot Doggett - Doggett being the one to accuse him. But Lukesh plays it cool, and keeps a calm pleasent face as Skinner accuses him further of being a serial killer. Lukesh mentions a lawyer and postulates that Doggett is probably confused and under alot of stress. Skinner asks about Lukesh's mother and bringing her down for questioning to which Lukesh shuts him down and tells him to either arrest him or leave him alone. As Lukesh leaves the police station he comes face to face with Monica, who immediate calls him out on all the bad things he's done, he taunts her and tells her that he enjoyed bleeding her "like a pig". Monica glares at him as he leaves, her face stoney and very very angry.
Back at Lukesh's apartment, he is cooling off after the excitement of the day, he calls to his mother and talks to her but she remains unusually silent. Lukesh opens the drawer where he keeps his gun and finds it missing. He calls to his mother again and walks into her bedroom to see her sitting at her bed with the gun resting on a tray infront of her. She confronts him on the gun and on the fact that she's noticed him sneaking out in the middle of the night and leaving her all alone. She then shows him the messages that the FBI have been leaving and demands to know what is going on. Lukesh pleads with her and starts to cry when she says that she's going to talk to the FBI and tell them what she knows. Seeing no other option Lukesh pulls out his razor blades and advances on his mother, he gives her a cold and nasty look before slashing her up and killing her.
In Doggett's hospital room, Monica is gently giving him a shave. Doggett tells her she missed as spot, but she retorts that "that's what you get for hiring cheap help". Doggett then concedes that Monica is probably correct about the parallel dimensions and that two Doggetts can't exist in one world. He tells her that there is a way for her to fix this, telling her to "pull the plug" presumably on his life support. Monica looks stricken and doesn't think it's funny, but Doggett insists it's the only way to go, and that she'll get "her" Doggett back. Monica accuses him of not really believing her theory, but instead of wanting to die rather than be paralyzed. With tears starting to form in her eyes, she tells him she'd do anything for him, but she won't help him die.
Monica suddenly gets a call from Skinner, he's at Lukesh's residence where they have found the dead body of the mother slashed up by Lukesh. The agents wonder how they'll find Lukesh now that he's disappeared again, but Monica states that he'll find them instead.
67 Bennett Ave, Washington D.C. Monica is in her apartment walking around, checking her rooms and looking about the place. The other agents, Scully, Skinner and Follmer are outside her apartment watching her through cameras. They're trying to set a trap for Lukesh, certain he'll come back for revenge. As Monica sidles around a corner picking something up, Lukesh grabs her from behind and clamps his hand over her mouth. He rips out her earpieces and whispers into her ear how much he's going to enjoy killing her, again. Looking at the camera feed, Scully wonders where Monica has disappeared to and speculates that Lukesh is in the apartment with her. Follmer isn't so sure, but they can't reach her........... Lukesh continues to threaten Monica and is about to cut her throat when Follmer bursts in through the front door and nails Lukesh right between the eyes with one carefully aimed shot. Lukesh is dead, and Follmer assures Monica that it is over.
Monica walks into Doggett's hospital room to see him awake, she looks very sad. She closes and locks the door behind her before walking up to his bedside and taking his hand in both of hers. Then with one had she turns the alarms off on his heart monitor and proceeds to shut off his life support. As the ventillator whizzes off, Doggett strokes Monica's hand with his finger. Monica is full on weeping now as they gaze at eachother and Doggett dies.
Monica puts Doggett's hand down and closes her eyes, but when she opens them again everything has changed. Somehow the space-time continuum has corrected itself and Monica finds herself back in her apartment just as she was at the beginning of the show. She turns around to the sound of Doggett's voice and sees him very much alive and well from before. She stares at him in joyous relief. He sees that she's been crying and asks her what is wrong before she wraps her arms around him and pulls him into a tight hug. Doggett is concerned but Monica weeping and still hugging him, tells him that she is good. Fade out on Monica smiling.
The End.
