Director Ivan Dixon and a small crew filmed background footage at the 1978 Galacticon in Los Angeles. There, he asked the 'Fans Choice' winners at the costume competition, J. Blake Mitchell and James Fergusun, to use their 'cat' and 'lizard' costumes in 'Spaced Out'. Mitchell and Fergusun were allowed to visit the set during filming, but not to wear the costumes because they were not members of the extras' union. However, their creations were introduced as 'Major Fergusun' and 'Captain Mitchell' on screen.

"Space Quest" is a clear reference to Star Trek (1966). "Space Quest" is owned by Paragon Studios, a reference to Star Trek's owners Paramount Studios. The receptionist who checks Diana in says the convention is being used to promote the comeback of the series. The episode aired in January 1979, while "Star Trek" was about to make a comeback in December with Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). Coincidentally, Rene Auberjonois would go on to to be a part of the "Star Trek" franchise, having played an uncredited role in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) before getting a starring role as Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993).
