J. Edward Day (1914-1996), the first mystery guest, had become the U.S. Postmaster General in the beginning of John F. Kennedy's administration. His goals were to reduce the postal deficit, introduce the 'Zone Improvement Plan' (ZIP) codes, and improve service and employee morale. The non-mandatory five-digit ZIP Codes were introduced nationwide on July 1, 1963.
Joyce Case James, the only contestant, was a national aerobatics champion pilot, who in 1960 joined the Beech Aircraft Corporation helping new owners take delivery of their airplanes. In 1962, she was one of three pilots selected to tour the U.S. in the newly developed Beechcraft Muskateer. She eventually became the first woman to join Beech's all-male production test pilot team, where she tested Bonanzas, Barons and King Airs.
