- Nearing the end of their trip, a mother with four beautiful daughters, all of marrying age and a wagon train full of men who are either the same or wanting to be and the Major is not off limits either.
- Major Adams promised his Aunt Abigail to watch out for a widow, Mrs. Steele, and her four unmarried daughters on their way to California. The girls Faith, Hope, Charity, and Prudence range in age from 30 to 16. The girls are flirtatious without intending to be so and are causing problems with every man on the train - single and married. Adams is inundated with complaints from wives and trying to protect the girls. Mrs. Steele is on a mission to find husbands for the girls but her desires and the girls desires do not always mesh. As they near Lake Tahoe they attend a party sponsored by the wealthy single forty something Bill Dashwood. The oldest daughter Faith overhears Dashwood tell his nephew that he has no use for scheming women causing her to spurn his offer to dance and sparking his interest. They leave the party with Mrs. Steele in turmoil over her unmarried daughters. Dashwood and his nephew decide to pursue Faith and Hope on the train. It takes Prudence eloping to break the ice between Dashwood and Faith while Adams decides Jeremiah Collingwood needs an upgrade in appearance which changes Charity's attitude toward him. That still leaves Mrs. Steele unattached.—Anonymous
