Quotes

  • Abigail Newkirk : [Abigail, the missionary, leads the singing]  Go bury thy sorrow. The earth has its share. Don't carry it deeply, go hide it with care. Go think of it calmly when curtained by night. Go tell it to Jesus and all will be right. Go tell it to Jesus, and all will be right. Go tell it to Jesus, he know why you grieve. Go tell it to Jesus, he'll send you relief. Go gather the sunshine he sheds on the way. He'll lighten thy burden, go weary one, pray.

  • Sam Livingston : I been talking temperance to him, but he just won't listen. That's his problem.

    Abigail Newkirk : What?

    Sam Livingston : Pigheaded.

    Abigail Newkirk : I knew I shouldn't have asked.

  • Sam Livingston : I'll spare the details but anyway, the biscuits burnt. I got so mad I threw them out the back door as far as I could throw 'em. Endicott's old man was out there and, being a pig, he didn't much care if the biscuits were burnt or not. He started rooting around there in the biscuits. Pretty soon he was coming up with some pretty good colour.

    Abigail Newkirk : Colour?

Sam Livingston : Gold. Pretty fair strike too. So I figure, if his boy wants a beer now and then, he's got it coming to him.

  • Abigail Newkirk : Here, soak your head.

Sam Livingston : That's not for me. That's for Endicott.

    Abigail Newkirk : Endicott?

Sam Livingston : The other half of the family. Like to meet him?

Abigail Newkirk : Can he drive a wagon?

Sam Livingston : I dunno. Come on, let's ask him.

  • Sam Livingston : A dollar a day, huh?

Abigail Newkirk : And all you can eat.

Sam Livingston : What about Endicott?

Abigail Newkirk : Oh, we'll take him too. I'll make biscuits for him. No beer though.

  • Abigail Newkirk : [Sam and Abigail singing together]  One more mountain to California, oop de oop de ay. One more mountain, one more mountain to haul. One more mountain to haul... One more mountain, one more mountain to cross...

  • Abigail Newkirk : Well, don't keep me in suspense. What held you up?

Sam Livingston : Oh, it was almighty cold. Remember how cold it was, Cass?

    Cass Fleming : Sure do.

Sam Livingston : We were in November, you see. It was touch and go there for a while whether we'd get over the hump before the first snow. Well, anyway, of all times Cass decided to wash his long johns and hung them the night before.

Cass Fleming : Ha, ha. I remember. In the morning they were frozen stiff.

Sam Livingston : You could've busted them in half over your knee.

Cass Fleming : Sam, how come you remember a thing like that?

Sam Livingston : Easy. You took mine. Only had one spare pair and I was fixing to put them on myself. You took 'em. We had quite a fight about that. Before we were finished, you threw me in the creek. Started out in 25 degree weather and I was soaking wet. That's why I remember.

Abigail Newkirk : Why'd you throw him in the creek?

Sam Livingston : Aw, mainly because I was only sixteen years old, about half the size of Cass.

  • Abigail Newkirk : I promised not to work on you so I won't.

    Sam Livingston : Thanks.

Abigail Newkirk : But you're sure ripe for a sermon.

  • Abigail Newkirk : [the missionary is leading the singing in Abigail's Mission situated opposite the Sacramento Opera House]  The weary must pray. Go, bury thy sorrow. The world hath its share. Go, bury it deeply. Go, line it with care... Go, tell it to Jesus and all will be right. Go, tell it to Jesus and all will be right.

  • Abigail Newkirk : You're lost. You're mired down in hatred and vengeance. I won't preach to you, Sam, because I think you're beyond redemption.

Sam Livingston : Abby, I've gone through nineteen years of hell for this. I've dreamed about it, I've prayed for it.

Abigail Newkirk : Prayed? Don't talk to me about prayer, Sam Livingston. It's time you learnt what prayer is. It's time you learnt that you can't pray for vengeance, you can't pray for destruction and ruination. You can't pray out of hatred. If you gonna pray, Sam, pray for yourself.
