Flint's talkative friend Cliff Grundy joins the wagon train supposedly to stake a claim to a gold strike he found. During a buffalo hunt, Cliff is severely injured during a stampede and not expected to live. The train has to move on so Flint decides to stay with Cliff until he dies. Craig Manson volunteers to stay to help but his real desire is the location of Cliff's gold strike. When a Sioux Indian spots them and Cliff continues to linger and improve, Manson dumps their water supply and leaves Cliff and Flint stranded on foot. Cliff heals enough to walk and the two man strike out for the nearest fort. A lack of water and bear attack almost kills them but they are rescued. They find Manson who has not fared as well and Flint learns about Cliff's "gold strike".
