The Alexander Portlass Room
bkoganbing7 May 2010
Robert Horton took center stage in this Wagon Train episode where he was captured and forced to go along with a treasure hunt expedition that is commanded by Peter Lorre in his guest appearance on Wagon Train.

Lorre plays a professor of archeology who is searching for an Aztec treasure left behind by an expedition that those people made north way out of Mexico. It's only a legend, but Lorre is convinced of it. His partners and other help are just wanting the reputed Aztec gold left behind.

Alexander Portlass, the title character Lorre plays has a dream of The Alexander Portlass Room in the British Museum filled with the treasures of his expedition which will mark the acclaim he will get in his profession. He gets his wish rather ironically in the end.

To see how life's little ironies play out for Peter Lorre, don't miss The Alexander Portlass Story if some channel starts broadcasting Wagon Train reruns.

What can Peter Lorre do for you?

The story here is kind of background to the atmosphere, because Peter Lorre literally takes over the show. He's always had a lot of presence for his small frame, but here you really see how much of a "ham" he is.

But what a joy to see this "ham". I don't eat pork, so I can watch a ham and not be envious.

Lorre gets our scout and some others on an "errant journey" so to speak. You already know it involves a mystic treasure, but that's not important. It's the atmosphere and the characters that you watch on this treasure hunt.

Well, you already know it won't end well for most of them. How many? That would be a spoiler, and I'm not spoiling it.
