The MacIntosh family on the wagon train consists of Samuel and his wife Sara and their pretty but strange daughter Heather. He is from the old country of Scotland and still believes in doing things as handed down to him. He has decided it is time for Heather to marry and she has not attracted any suitors. Her free time is spent talking to the animals - wild or tame. Samuel talks to Duke who is unwilling to give up his life as a scout to take a wife but when asked about suitors Duke mentions Hamish Browne of Irish descent. He is a born farmer who is traveling with his livestock including Lulu, his cow. His time is spent with the livestock with no time left for courting. He grew up in the backwoods with no mother and no knowledge of women. Samuel talks with Hamish about marrying Heather and convinces Hamish to sign a contract for the marriage with Samuel providing a dowry. The couple has never met and Duke is skeptical it will work. This appears to be a fact when Hamish leaves the wedding ceremony to attend to an ailing Lulu.
