The show was presented in three acts, and Frank Luther's song score features "In the Spring," "Missouri Meadowlark," "Warts Chant: Devils Follow Corpse," "Spunkwater," "Why Do You Want To Kiss Me?," "There's a New Girl in Town," "Run, Run, Run Chant," "Oath Chant: We Will Never Tell," "What Do You Kiss For?," "That's the Life For Me," "He Wasn't a Bad Boy," "Aunt Polly's Prayer," "Storm Come A-Risin'," "I Want To Go Home," "The Time Has Come To Say Goodbye," "We'll All Shout Together in the Morning," "It Ain't Fer Me," "Please Make Up," "Have a Happy Holiday" and "We'll All Shout Together in the Morning (Reprise)." The cast album, released several months later, features additional songs not used in the show, including "You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks," "I've Got to Whitewash the Fence," "My Love Has Gone Away" and "That Lucky Boy is Me." Omitted from the cast album is "Spunkwater" and the chants.
Curiously, although Tom and Huck are shown smoking corncob pipes in most of the publicity photos, there are no references to smoking in the broadcast script. Similarly, there is a staged publicity shot that shows Becky admonishing Tom and Huck for their bad behavior but the sequence is not in the script.
